Custom I/C and Radiators
September 22, 2008 04:06PM
Curious if anyone has used Bell Intercoolers for a custom intercooler. The 240 is running freaking hot and with the new turbo, I already blew a hole in the old intercooler and I'm afraid to do it again in the heat of a race. The gentleman at Bell seems to know what he's talking about. (And don't squawk at me about "just use an NPR intercooler". Those things are harder to find than anything else.)

Also talking to Bill at Ron Davis Radiators about a new rad. They seem pretty damn reasonable and willing to get stuff out in time for next week's race at Prescott. Bill Holmes also suggested them.

$0.02 from anyone? Thanks.

The Bell Intercoolers are really nice. I would rank them right at the top along with Setrab http://www.setrabusa.com/intercoolers.htm.

Scary as it sounds the cheap ones of eBay are a better deal. The tanks are a little bit heavier and the fins aren't always as strait but they're not bad. Plus you can have at least two of them for the price of a Bell or Setrab.

The intercooler guy at Bell knows his shit. Worked for Ferrari in the F1 turbo days, then later for Nissan with the 1000+ hp GTP cars. Nice guy too.

I've had good success with Evolution Racewerk intercoolers. There was an intercooler shoot out in one of the tuner mags and the Evolution Racewerks intercoolers posted the lowest intake temps. It's partly due to the endtank design but the cores they use are superior.

Here is some basic logging
http://www.evolutionracewerks.com/product.php

I had a custom ER intercooler on the SRT-4 (which has withstood numerous rallies) and the new Subaru sports a custom ER front mount. They're in So Cal and can hustle if you're in a pinch. Let me know if you want me to talk to them for you.

Radiators – I bought a Howe radiator from Summit ($175) and cut it down to fit, welded on taps etc and it ended up being 1/3 the price of a Ron Davis but it’s not as nice. RD makes some nice shit! Another option is ebay…there are lots of used fancy nascar radiators that would most likely fit in the front of a Brick. They’re like $1k radiators for under $200!!

Are you talking about Gerhardt? Something about German engineers who don't need to look up numbers to do complicated math and who are very nice to you and willing to sit through your dumb questions makes me feel good. smiling smiley He's even got a bigger and thicker core into a form factor slightly smaller than the current OEM IC.

Since both of these companies have had great pre-sales customer service so far (and another Turbobricker I know has a Ron Davis Rad that we're just slightly adjusting specs on), I feel pretty good about both companies.

I also looked at the Summit rads and thought about some other routes, but I'm over hokeying things together myself. I'm finally following my own advice -- do it right the first time.

Thanks for the input.

The summit radiators are definately an alternative.

I order a Be Cool Universal Radiator for my Subaru just the other day...was a little skeptical as it was only $199.99 However after recieving it, it really is a very nice piece!

For the price i definately cannot argue.

I've also got an ebay intercooler, and have no concerns with using it, and have used others also!

I have some space issues and the direct out the side flow doesn't work real well on one side of my engine bay, even with the adapters.

Andrew, is that your GC8? Nice.

Anyway, go with a Mishimoto aluminum radiator if you're looking for a cheap efficient one. Cheaper than Fluidyne and still good quality. Check the BoomBop Shop vendor on eBay.

How's the motor going?
