rule changes
November 05, 2008 09:15PM
let me be the first to say it here:

GOD FUCKING DAMN IT!!!

The new gr 5 rules open up the opportunity to build open class killers.

Anybody going to build a turbocharged rear drive mid-engined death mobile? Why do we have a restriction on what make of engine goes in what car anymore?

I'm more pissed that I just bought a semi pre-built car than ever....might as well start prepping to run production in a couple years, or just laughing when someone actually ends up building a mid-engined rear drive setup and then promptly gets banned.

Could make some more new classes please? I need my own class to win...

Guess not... Can you put a Suzuki motorcycle engine in a Suzuki car?

its just going to be laughable when someone builds a real car and promptly the powers that be ban it for being way too fast, or create a new class for it all together, creating more confusion...

In my opinion this rule should've been stated more obviously for what they want to do: yes it is ok to run a subie or mitsu car fwd or rear wheel drive. And no, it is not ok to drop a turbo lump mid engined into a golf or civic and watch everyone cry about how ridiculously fast it is when it doesn't mechanically DNF,

Cool. I like this rule change. Hopefully this will bring more people into 2WD. Plus it makes bench racing that much more fun.

don't see why not, it's by the same manufacture.

Then why don't you build that car? I think you're worrying about nothing. A car like that would still need a driver. YOU could make it ridiculously fast but me, maybe,or anybody else with less talent and smaller cajones, not so much.
I thought about how cool it would be to build a mid engined turbo Omni long ago but then figured that would be too much work when it really wouldn't be any faster than a turbo FWD Omni...

he's right - game changing.
freaky levels of fabrication.
i'm not giving away my next car . . .
but it will now be class legal.
fun.
questions:
rear engine front wheel drive?
does the engine have to stay in the engine bay?
can i put a boxer motor in the back seat of a subaru, and use fwd output for rear wheels?

Sure if you don't think torque is important in a rally car.

I'd LOVE to see that!!!!!

no exhaust....just a downpipe with a race cat welded at the ends...

a big porsche spoiler w/the intercooler and radiator....

cabin temps might get a little high?

Using the motorcylces gearbox, with sequential shift and Close ratio gearbox will fix the torque problem. It does have REVs...like 11.5 thousand of them. 195hp 4 stage drysump. The whole engine/gearbox package can't weigh more than 200lbs.

I have to say though it's pipe dream. I was said out of fun. But after a few beers I get feisty so....you asked....

Have you seen the many hayabusa powered RALLY cars?

There's two or three hayabusa starlets in OZ land and NZ that I know of and a MK2 escort thats honda 1000RR powered.

Like this one

Yeah his car goes like shit... No way that would be competitive here in the states.(roll eyes)

Another...

Terrible engine choice for rally. Just won't do.

Sucks that we have to keep engine and bodies by the same manufacturers here in the states, so you'd have to Put that setup in a suzuki swift.

So would the new rules allow a car that was previously FF to be MR, this isn't clear to me??

Bad ass escort Mk2 motorcycle powered.
