B21/B23 are the Volvo OHC motors with forged steel cranks
Only difference tween the two is the bore: B21 is 92mm; B23 is 96mm
62mm main journals, 54mm rod journals.
B230 beginning in maybe 84 had cast iron cranks. early to some point in 89 had 55 mains and 49mm rods.
Later, like mid 89 on to the end had like 62,5mm mains and kept the 49mm rods.
Both early and late have same machining dimensions like 231,7 deck height.
Stock rod c-c on the B21/B23 is 145mm and comp hgt is 46mm. 24mm pin.
B230 rod is a flimsey POS at 152mm c-c and its comp hgt is 39,7mm. 23mm pin

I have them all the time when people order but everybody wants something diferent so I do all pistons as customs.
What's the latest?
The latest is my Sooper Bitchin 160mm c-c and matching 31.4mm comp hgt pistons with Chevy sized pins 23.5mm right in the middle.
The longer rod allows the shorter pin height which means
nearly 425g weight saving over the B23 pistons, or 275g over B230 pistons.
B21/B23 rods are called "M" rods and weight like 880 grams, my rods are 140g lighter.
The transformation of the whole feel of the motor when it doesn't have to swing those absurdly heavy rods and pistons is simply amazing "It doesn't feel like a tractor motor any more" is the way one guy put it.
I say it drags the motors squarely into the early 90s in design terms and not a decade too early!
Everything above the blocks interchanges including the B234 16v head.
The obvious strongest choice is the B23. A LATER B230 will do nicely too.
If one has to pay 50-100 bucks for a core B23 bottom end ask "When can I buy a kick ass forged steel crank for 100 bucks?"
