v-band clamps
January 17, 2009 12:11AM
My current exhaust is completely and entirely welded from turbo to exhaust tip. I find this to be good in that nothing comes apart - I also find this to really suck whenever you have to do any work.

So, w/the new motor - I'll be building a new exhaust - do you guys recommend v-band clamps for rally applications??

Thanks,

Vittorio -

First link that came up when googling "exhaust springs"
http://pitposse.stores.yahoo.net/ststswexsp.html
The better ones have full loops on each end, then you weld a small rod onto the exhaust to slip the spring over, and put a pin through the end of the rod to hold the spring on, safety wire the pin to something.
Wait I have a pic I think...

Should be a pin through the rear one too. The safety wire goes to another pin on the other side.

Bah! When I did things like that I had rock tear off the stubby post.
It was kinda cool cause then I got fresh air into the system and had soooper neat-o bright blue flames spitting out the back on shifts, but that was when men were men and we did night stages (actually I was sppoked cause it really lit up the woods and I was wondering what the fawk was going on till I heard the POOOOOF and lifted for fun and poooof blue light! Cool! Like a bad ass turbo car!)

Here's what I reccommend now for slip fit:

I like the shape, a wedge tends to deflect rocks, and a bolted connection is more secure than a spring which can disappear and then whaddya do in the field?
This just drop in a fresh nut and bolt.
One or two per joint will do.
There's even 3/16s for really hard core applications.
CHEAP as always from AA MFG.

Cheaper even when I order a bunch.

You could easily fab those things up in the garage.
I like the bolt style for simplicity. I also never carry around spare H.D. springs.

We never lost any springs last season, but the bolt seems simple too.

ok guys - I'm really stupid in a lot of area's around cars - I can figure shit out, eventually smiling smiley , but I've just not been around the terminology all that much...

Slip fit - is that the exhaust tubing I've seen (and used) at the parts store where one end of the piece has a slightly smaller OD (male) than the piece you are slipping the part into (female) ?

and, for connections, you use one of the flange parts (seems that ball flange would worke well - not gaskets ?) - preferrable a 2 bolt?

I happened to find a couple of springs just today that will fit the bill - just hope I can locate them when I actually need them..

On the car pictured above the slip fit was a 3 part design.
MS paint version:

With much looser tolerances than your average parts store exhaust.
There were 4 sections to the exhaust.
1: turbo bellmouth to ~ 6" downstream. Have a spare one made and bolt it to your spare turbo for quick turbo changes.
2: The rest of the downpipe to just behind the trans, as in the picture above.
3: Mid section to just behind the rear axle.
4: Rear section, like where a regular muffler/tailpipe would be. This is where the cat was.
No other silencers/mufflers/resonators in the system.

I'm pretty sure that it was a symms group n exhaust, or some kind of symms rally exhaust. We never had any issues with it, although I smeared copper antiseize on all the slip fittings to help it come apart easier. There were no flex couplings of any sort, just make sure its mounted securely. The springs do probably provide a little movement, though.

Ah - pictures are worth a thousand words!

That looks awesome - I guess I never paid too much attention to what the big teams were doing in that respect - but I do now remember seeing springs and such attached to some dismantled exhaust -

Is this device welded to the pipe? Sorry for the obvious question - and why is it better than the stud in the picture? Lower profile?

Somewhere I have piccies of the old Prodrive Subaru exhausts. I'll have to dig through the pile of CDs.

Muchachito diiiiiiiiiiiiiiioooo miiiiio!!!
If the connecting part gets bashed and the spring hops off the stud, your connection is compromised, and we all agree we don't carry around specific springs.

The two pieces are welded on one on the one pipe, the other on the other overlapping and lined up so the bolt passes thru.

It can get smashed to shit and it still holds, and the time difference is maybe a second or three.

And yeah the shape helps, look at it, it helps deflect, no perpendicular anything to catch and get ripped off.
You cut your service time so short that a coupla seconds difference matters?

ahh - very good - ho capito, I get it...

and if I'm taking my exhaust off during a 20min service - I've got much bigger problems - seconds won't make a darned bit of difference winking smiley

Do you guys carry spare exhaust pieces in case you loose a piece or two on stage?
