Geniuses! Oi!
I guess if you merely call it "close ratio" enough and all your suck-buddies don't know shit either and they don't want to hurt your feeling so they call it "close ratio" also I guess that makes it close ratio..

The numbers don't look very close:
Ratios:
1 - 3.72
2 - 2.40
3 - 1.77
4 - 1.26
5 - 1.00

Fairly similar to the "close ratio" gears the Virtually Worthless guys all get stiffies about.

BUT! If could accept a 4 speed-----2nd to 5th look good. Or OK.

Come on, dogleg man! Nothing would be cooler than forgetting, throwing it into reverse and doing a backwards burnout at the start of a stage.

The dogleg trans might be a cool thing to have, but since I'm replacing the BMW rear end, I've gone up to a higher rear end ratio. As a result, I think the traditional pattern is going to be a better bet & here's my thinking:

ZF S5D transmission ratios are:

1st 4.20
2nd 2.29
3rd 1.66
4th 1.24
5th 1.00

Flat torque curve of the 3.0L will provide 180 ft/lbs or more from ~2500-6500rpm.
I'm anticipating 1st gear is worthless other than for loading on a trailer.
Running the gearing to MPH calcs I see that I can use 3rd & 4th gears from 26-89mph.

So, I'm thinking with the gearing and rear end I'll likely spend most of my time in 3rd & 4th gears as I'm not dealing with a peaky 4-cyl powerband. BMWs are notorious for the "money shift" so my hope is by making most of my gear changes 3-4, I'll cut down on that possibility.

Sean - thanks for the tip on the roof, I may go cut the roof skin off a TI locally. I tried to cut through the pillars but the electric sawzall I've got didn't have the battery to pull that off. I'm sure it'll go through the single skinned roof like butter.

Maybe it's time to purchase a gas powered chop saw. Useful for cutting off roofs or fighting zombies.

That's mainly the fault of BMW soft motor mounts and BMW doofus drivers.

Get good motor mounts and don't be a doofus.
