GGGGGGGggggggggggggggggggggrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

ASK: what will the effort to swap to electric motor result in for advantage?

Is the imagined swap guaranteed way more better-er More reliable? More cheaper?

How much faster-erz will you be knowing the steering wheel is assisted with an electric motor instead of via a belt from the motor motor....?

And finally isn't there some pron site you could be perusing that will yield way more long term satisfying outcomes???

Subi had one too for the SVX, like the MR2, it was done for space savings. From the people I've talked with that tried them on rally cars and off-road cars, the advantage wasn't there, they draw a lot of amperage from the alternator, which loads down the engine quite a bit, like a PS pump.

(yes, I know the MR2 also put the pump up front, so they wouldn't have to run ps lines from the mid-engine, but have you seen thier engine bays, TIGHT...)

Jeeeeeeezis, Thats what I'm asking.

Is the imagined swap guaranteed way more better-er More reliable? More cheaper?

I dunno, I was thinking of getting a nice fresh PS pump, because the current one is from the Carter administration, and maybe a new fangled electric one is cheaper and better

How much faster-erz will you be knowing the steering wheel is assisted with an electric motor instead of via a belt from the motor motor....?

Again, I dunno, thats why i'm asking. I'm sure its wouldn't help much, I'm just curious...

www.baconworld.com just doesn't do it for me like it used to...

I can understand a VW guy doing an electric pump because they are vulnerable to damage, but you have enough room in your engine compartment to cary a spare engine....

Subi had one too for the SVX,

SVX has a belt driven pump. The Subaru XT has the electric pump, I know of a few VW guys who've used those on their Golfs.

Thanks, I'm not much of a Subi guy, more Mazda and Toyota... I knew it was some older Subi with a wedge shape.

I used the Subaru Electric XT pump on the golf because the motor I had did not come with a pump and I had other things in that area. I also had a very high RPM motor so having consistent flow at a set RPM seamed like a good idea.

It worked well, easy to plumb to the VW rack.

I'm sick of knocking the return line out of my stock VW pump, so I'm planning to make the switch on the new build.

Anybody know where I can find an XT6 electric pump? Google only found Rockauto, who only offers R&R (For $250).

Fitting a part that isn't easy to find doesn't sound like a good idea....... just saying

Make a bracket to move the pump to where the AC compressor was

Who says it's not easy to find?
car-part.com

I can't guarantee you'll find them easily new, but that applies to alot of stuff from the 80s.

AC location has an oil cooler in the way. And doesn't fix the problem of the suction tube vibrating itself out of the VW pump.Any other widely available electric pumps people use?

It looks like a Mini Cooper uses an elec. pump. Anybody try those?

That's what I'm working on for my MKII, got the power rack in and have an idea of how/where to mount the pump.
A couple of questions though, there is a couple hundred PSI difference between the mini system and the OE VW system, is that anything to worry about? I was thinking of reducing voltage slightly to the pump to slow it down a little. Bad idea?
Where do you get/how are you guys making hoses with different fittings on them for a different pump?

A lot of recent Volvo use electric pumps, like the V70 or V40 :

http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/replacement_sm/volvo~power_steering_pump~replacement.html

Seems a bit cheaper too, but I don't know of anybody in rally that uses one. Some 240 owners did the swap to their daily driver and it seems to be working fine.

I need to look at my links before I post. I don't think it's for the electric ones.
