I think I've got it figured out, pretty simple really, after you get rid of all the stock crap. Here's my current plan:

Thermostat housing

Nope, the Ford works team didn't bother with water through the turbo, so neither am I. IIRC John said it's a anti-coking thing for shutting the car off from red hot - I think the turbo will probably be out for service long before that becomes an issue.

That is indeed the intended purpose. I dont even use the water cooling on my street driven cars. to me, i would rather simplify the cooling system and try to avoid future points of failure that are more likely to happen. And I also use sythetic oil that is very resistant to coking smiling smiley
your plan looks good to me Skye.

I don't have to eliminate mine. It's already been done for me.

People look at me like I'm crazy when I tell them to either get rid of it, or put a cooler on the return line. I never understood that really. I can't imagine with the temp a turbo is at the water can be very effective and it's simply super heating the water.

Speaking of which, have you seen the cool turbo cooler in the Burton catalog. Talk about a waste of money, but cool looking part nonetheless.

For a race car that's going to chew up the wheels before the bearings go, not important. For a street car that you want to just leave the hell alone without having to fuck around with it all the time, I'd leave it functional, maybe use AN hoses if you're worried about myriad coolant hoses running around waiting to explode.

Note those temps are Celcius not Fahrenheit. Even synthetic oil will turn to gunk if it gets to those temps.

Skye,
Tell me about the Volvo expansion tank. Is there something special about it that makes it better than the stock tank?

Cheers! John

Yeah the metal insert that the cap attaches to tends to separate from the plastic tank. Plus the thing has got like 5 hose connections, that's just wrong. John insisted I ditch the thing and I listened. Probably cracks too, seems like pretty thin and brittle plastic, maybe from being near the turbo. I made a mount on the other side for the new tank.

They never break, they are nice size and easy mount and the pressure caps are the same as Saab and in some markets others (Ford etc).
Grab the turbo style, the cylindrical size and the hose that comes out the bottom, its a moulded hose that starts at 3/4' and necks down to 5/8th, just right for "T" ing into the heater return line.

Don't forget to get the bottle mounting bits.

Anyone have pics of this bottle in their car? I'm putting together my junkyard shopping list. :-)

you can see it in the stock location in an '85 Volvo 740T, mounted on the front of the fender, behind where the airbox would normally be. Disregard the duct taped monstrosity, that was a temp just to have a working air filter for a day or two.

I see how to attach a file, but not how to hotlink one, so just click on the link:

For the last time !!!!

The water line that is connected to the turbo is to heat up the water not to cool down the fucking turbo. Who told everybody in Northern America that a liquid that boils at 100 degrees will be able to efficiently cool down a metal object that turns red fucking hot when working ?
