yeah, i know there are kits. they are an option too.

grant plans on offering kits too. doug davenport also offers a kit and is relatively local. and all are offering various stages of kits too. from just the bent bars all the way up to a whole kit.

i am exploring all my options.

one option is to buy the bent bars from someone and then get my own stuff locally for the rest of the cage.

another is a whole kit.

or i could drop it off at davenports and get it caged there too.

or maybe do the whole thing in my garage.

you know what they say, "you can get it done good, fast or cheap. pick two"

i am opting for good and cheap (relatively speaking), i am in no hurry to get on the stages. having the project car to occupy my time is part of the fun for me. the whole process is my hobby.

if i overextend myself and spend to much too fast i will burn out and not be able to be in the sport for very long. that is NOT what i want to have happen. if it takes me another year or two to get out on the stages behind the wheel i really dont mind.

maybe i just listened to johnny cash too much as a kid.

that can be arranged. it would work with a 97 hood and 95 left and 97 right lights. rear hubs, brakes and diff. will be from a legacy. front cross member, clutch/brake pedal assembly is a 02 WRX (previous owner was going to turbo it). rallycross/track struts will be from an 04 sti. transmission is from a late 90s JDM WRX.

what exactly do i need to ask for when ordering cage materials? is this the right stuff?

1-3/4 OD x .095 wall x 1.560 ID 1020 DOM Structural Round Steel Tube

i am fortunate to have a steel supplier here in fargo (10 blocks from my house) but i am unsure if they can get me what i need.

i saw that some have ordered 10 20' sections and had some left over. that seems like a lot.

1020 mild steel meets the maximum allowed limits of alloying elements laid out for FIA so should be OK.

I would get 8 20' lengths to start; that should be enough to do it all out of the one 1.75" OD size. If you want to put 1.5" in other areas, you need to measure it out. If you plan your cuts well, your can keep the wastage down pretty small. The main hoop and half laterals are the items that take 10' or longer lengths.

what about the place that refers to the tubing as round tubing bushing stock?

the supplier is McNelius Steele.

seems like right around 110 feet is the magic number for an impreza cage that will exceed the minimum rules set out by RA.

gotchya!

something that is not found in a muffler shop. smooth bends that dont crush.

am i missing anything in my list of bars that need bending?

Main Hoop
Windshield bar (could be done straight but it seems to be a better fit if it is bent)
Front A pillar bars (these seem to be the trickiest to get just right)

bars that could benefit from bending:
roof V bars
door X (if i choose to go that route)
