So a tranny was thrown in with the super nifty ABF 16v (teaser shot here: http://www.mack73.com/rally/stageIII/IMG_5102.jpg)
So now I've got a choice between two different gear sets. As a complete novice I don't want to screw this up .... so which gear set would be the best. The final drive will be the same between the two. Here are the specs: CDA: 1 3.30 2 1.94 3 1.31 4 1.03 5 .84 AYK: 1 3.778 2 2.118 3 1.429 4 1.029 5 0.837 In listening to all of John's "advise", I know I'm after the shortest possible (AYK) but would the CDA have any advantage? My main reason against the CDA is its 3rd gear ratio -Jason |

Ehaddya getting for final? Do the gear x final thing. Post results John Vanlandingham Sleezattle, WA, USA Vive le Prole-le-ralliat www.rallyrace.net/jvab CALL +1 206 431-9696 Remember! I guess that's what I get for growing up in the spell check age :/ Only thing easly attainable is a 4.24 but that's not much. What ratio's can you get John? Oh and you'll have to hook me up with some suspenders in the future -Jason |

Oh and > you'll have to hook me up with some suspenders in > the future > > > 94 Golf > www.Mack73.com I've seen a place in UK selling 4.46 which would be a good compromise so that first isn't completely useless. That's about another 9% shorter and if you think that you'll doubtless end up with taller tires, probably 7-8% taller then every little bit helps. And sure no problem on the suspenders, I just ordered another 20 feet of steel for the 40mm inserts and I also ordered steel for the 50mm inserts I have 46 of. So now there is choice. Now remember theres lead time on the 40s as Bilstein build the inserts when I order them, and the 50s I have have all sorts of various damp settings so to be spot on with what we know we want, they have to be revalved so there's a 3 week thing, too. So plan and give me as much lead time as you can. You can feel free to call or drop by, I'm just down by the airport. Perfect thanks for the info John. CDA sounds like the ticket
I might want to even go a bit higher than a 4.46 if they make one, maybe something in the 4.6 range. I'd still be maxing out in the 120-130 range with a 4.46 I'll be in touch about the suspenders, it will be a little bit until I've got the dough for them - gotta get a better welder and cage before I think about all of the rebuild purchases -Jason |

ok this gearing stuff is starting to make more sense, the problem isn't the R&P - its the wide ratio OEM gearing, and no matter what R&P is chosen, its not going to make up for it - so I guess I should maximise all the available gears to put the typical speeds in a proper place in a gear (not at the top or bottom)

If you throw the gearing up onto a graph (such as Quaife's little program available at www.quaifeusa.com or the Home Site which excapes me at the moment) you'll see that, generally speaking, the higher gears are spaced closer together. So a shorter R&P is still beneficial even with a stock transmission.

Hey Mack,
In reading the notes here, I'd recommend that you go with the CDA and the mid-4's gearing. Then you have a chance to use all 5 gears. You would only reach 5th on occasion, but 1-4 would be very useful. And don't be worrying about calculating speeds over 100-105 in a rally Golf. As a point of ref, we are going with a 2.95-1st/.083-5th in a new car. Regards, Mark B. |
