Okay so I um, well, I um, own a *cough cough M *cough G *cough cough B...

But it's a GT so it's cool right?

But it slow as H$ll... doesn't have an overdrive, and when I road trip, I wear ear plugs... It's been converted to an overly impressive downdraft weber, which stinks of unburnt fuel no matter what I do, and the last time I won a drag race, the school bus was fully loaded with kids.

But I kinda like the car.

There's a plethora of engine swap options, but none I've really liked. I don't want a V8, no matter how close it is to the "factory V8's", and I sure as whatever don't want a Buick V6... If I wanted a Miata engine, I'd be cheaper off to buy a Miata...

But, Duratecs sound cool, I like the idea of the ease of fuel management with the injector bungs in the head, and I understand they come in Ranger's with a transmission BEHIND them.

What I can't get from scouting various sites is an understanding of what years are decent (is there any difference?) and what the deal is with the stock ECU. Some folks seem to be doing all kinds of easy cool things (throttle bodies, cams, etc) with the stock ECU, others are running stand alone.

I want EASY, that WORKS, doesn't smell bad, and sounds AWESOME! of,and it would be cool if 110 km/hr was under 3800 rpm...

So you Duratec gods, tell me the ways of finding cheap Ford goodness in the pick and pull!

You do know that Skye, the owner of this here site, also runs this:

So don't be skeeeered at asking about that stuff here or there.

That's all I know.

Yes,

I hang out there too...

But there are really two groups over there, those that discuss the nuances of which door card fasteners are correct, and the V8 guys who figure if you're gonna swap, it better have 300lbs of torxes or it ain't worth it. I talked of a Volvo 4 cylinder there once, and got laughed at...

From what I can tell little has been done with a Duratec. A few random sites with the 2.0 in the UK, not much here.

I should re-post my new 4 cylinder thoughts there though, give it another chance.

My main reason for yapping my trap here, is there seems to be some relevant info on the motor here... as for sticking tab a in slot b... that'll be a measuring tape and a lead hammer.

The Ranger oil pan is rear sump right???

Well, the easy button is the grab the entire NC MX-5 Duratec setup. Get the 2.0 liter engine and trans. The wiring will be useful, but I'd skip the ECU in favor of aftermarket management. Lots of documentation on what sort of power to expect. All the parts are from the same source and you know they are compatible. Rear sump the correct depth for a sports car and has oiling control already built in for cornering. Juggle the final drive ratio and tire size so it ends up the same overall as the MX5.

Are you against forced induction? Like, say, the LNF 2.0T Ecotech....

Hmmm

I think I'm not in for turbos... doesn't seem to fit with the car. Not that I don't like turbos in general! I know the Duratec is a long way from stock... I really don't care what color the original starter was... but there is something of a essence of the car.

I have thought of a supercharger on the stock motor...

My understanding on the Solstice ecotec is that without some sort of adapter, I'll have to reach behind the seats to shift... Could be other options, and the ecotec itself isn't ruled out, but what RWD transmissions fit?

Thanks.

I believe that a place called quad4rods.com has an adapter to put a T5 behind an ecotec. They also have adapters to put a T5 and a T9 behind the Duratec...

Apparently, the Solstice/Sky, Colorado/Canyon, H3, and Isuzu Trooper all share the same 5-speed transmission and bellhousing as well. I believe it's the Aisin AR5 transmission...
