I found a good donor at Pick-n-pull for the neon rebuild. It even has good windshield and rear glass. Does anybody have tips-tricks-tools for removing these? Big flat head screwdrivers?

Thanks

Sean

cheap, fast, easy: some piano wire (hell maybe a guitar string will work) and some sort of handle to wrap it around... saws it right out.

I dunno where to find piano wire around here, but I got a nifty little windshield knife for about 20 bucks:

it slides in, and cuts pretty well. you gotta be careful at the lower corners of the windshield so you don't crack it, though...

or, if you've got a sawzall, the auto-glass-repair places around here have some sort of a non-toothed blade that works freakin' awesomely.

Sergeant, I have had ZERO luck, total strike out wif that tool but I was sawing Xratty windscreens whic real glass guy told me use recycled German autobahn surface as the glue.
MAYBE it works wif 'merkun polyurethane stuff but not for echt Deutsch qualität aphalt...

Sawzall blade sounds good but poor Sean is in a junk yard so powering the sawzall is an issue

I've successfully used the Harbor Freight windshield removal kit a few times now.
Also learned that breaking out the window was NOT the fast way to remove it on the quarter windows...

trickiest part is getting the wire started. I shattered the front window trying slide a knife through. For the rear window I heated up a coat hanger and melted a hole through to get the piano wire started. Napa sells the wire by itself for $10 and it should be enough for the rest of your life. drill holes in a couple of dowel pieces for handles.

Wrong! a good 4x4 to smash thru up to the edges, then a nice hammer to pulverize the glass to death on the gluey goop, then a vicious wire wheel in the 8" Makita, comes out like 9snap) that.
Wear lots of eye protection.

Definitely piano wire. And try not to saw "up." Pull it down towards the A pillar/roof/cowl to minimize the chance of clipping the edge of the glass and cracking it.

also, John, they do make Battery powered Sawsalls now. You can get them in pretty decently priced kits with drill drivers.

Yeah, the Merkur windshield glue is particularly robust. The Harbor Freight tool may work on the Neon, though.

After having tried everything under the sun I usually have the most success with an old steak knife and a propane torch. You have to put a bit of a bend in the steak knife for access then heat up the end of it about an inch or two) until it glows orange then plunge it in and cut/melt through the glue. You melt through a few inches and then reheat. Works well for the strong polyurethane glue like the Merkur. You still have to be careful not to twist the knife and crack the glass.

Thanks for the posts. I likely won't have any help at the PNP, so I might not try to retrieve these pieces of glass. I popped in next door to the PNP at a glass place and they quoted me $290 installed for the front and rear using clean, used glass. PNP would charge me $110 if I can get the glass out myself and I know I would probably take a few hours between removal and install. I think I am going to let the pros do this one. My DD needs a new windshield too, so I might try for the volume discount.

That said, learning how to remove a windshield and having a spare would be good for service for multiday rallies.

I found out AFTER I broke a Golf windshield trying to remove it from a donor, that if you use PB Blaster or a good penetrating oil (my favorite is Kimball-Midwest - if you can find it, get it, makes PB look like 5W30) to liberally hose down the adhesive goop around the windshield and then wait a little while, you can pretty much just push the thing out.

Just, don't do it on a car you car about the interior. I hear it makes a helluva mess all over the place.

But seriously, Kimball-Midwest. Not sure if they sell to stores or only to businesses.
