FIA 255-14 - Gutting Doors
August 09, 2012 04:42PM
I'm wondering if I can get some advise on door gutting + replacing with FIA 255-14 door panels.

It looks like the orientation of the honeycomb in the illustration is not the strongest. It's really squishy in that direction.

For those of you who have gutted doors and replaced with this structure... how did you orient the honeycomb?

having not done any research on it...

is that diagram actually intended to describe the orientation, or more of a illustration of 'crabon goes here, honeycomb goes here, crabon goes here'?

I'd guess the latter, but it's widely observed that I don't know much.

Why would it make a lick of difference on how the honeycomb is aligned?

The cells are very strong in one axis, and very weak in the other two from what I can tell.

Cut the ends off of 10 pop cans and arrange them with a board on top with th open ends up, it will be very strong. Stack the cans with the open ends out, put a board on top, what do you think will happen?

I researched this some years ago and indeed the orientation of the cells is not shown properly in that diagram.

You can think of the proper orientation as a bunch of soda straws chopped into 1" lengths

The French can't draw pictures any better than a mime draws applause...

I'd really suggest contacting Hurst about this before you show up at an event. tech@rally-america.com

If done incorrectly a car will not get a pass at scrutineering.

Josh and others had a big thread on specialstage discussing this.
The end result typically is that you are better off not gutting the doors.

I would go with the new foam stuff before this, however, I probably wouldn't gut the doors, either grinning smiley

I sent off an email to Mike Hurst, he replied almost instantly. He has indicated that the orientation of the honeycomb is incorrect in the diagram, as I had suspected.
