DIY dashboard
January 09, 2013 05:39PM
Need to make a dash for the 80. (self inflicted need) Thinking ABS plastic or some such and rivet it on to a couple square steel tubes for framework. Any caveats or gotchas to a race dash other than making sure wiring is easy to get to?

Be really cool to see some pictures of completed dashboards for inspiration.

Thinking something like this.

One flat panel to for the top with overlap to shade the gauges and another flat panel to stick em in.

I've also got some badass velcro that i'd like to try before riveting.

Forgot whose car it was, but the panels were made out of Lexan with some black spray-bomb. Light and it ain't gonna break.

Don't have a brake, don't trust myself to make it look good either.

Can I weld dash mounts to the cage? or is that considered a cage modification?

You can weld dash mounts in a 'normal' cage. You cannot modify a homologated cage, which ususally doesn't have dash bars anyway.

Rivets are a pain if you have to work on something under or behind the dash. You can drill and use self threading machine screws, dzues fasteners, stove bolts (weld the nuts captive) all sorts of stuff that might be easier to access in the heat of a battle.

What I've done is use a long bolt, run a nut down and cinch it up and the extra length is not a fixed stud. Place panel over and run a nut down from front side. . easy access and quick and costs a couple of pennies instead of fancy schmantzy dzuz, or cheezoid self tappers.

I am speaking of the fuese and gauge and relay panel above the tunnel to the STOCK dash

Stock dash.
Except Eric B's Mazdaspeed 3, I have never seen one that wasn't stock that didn't look like shit. If you don't care if it looks like shit, then why even bother with a dash?

Some rules require you to run a dash...and the Evo dash is heavy, so not a bad way to drop 15 lbs. But it does look like sh!t.

I'd use the stock dash other than I buggered it pretty bad. Hence the self inflicted need.

My Dash
Out of Aluminum. Can't remember the thickness, but probably .063 or thicker. Just make sure you use a metal prep the sheet before you paint it. Paint doesn't like to stick to aluminum.

Dash looks awesome - but that dash bar scares me...though maybe its just the angle of the pic. It looks like you could have some pretty nasty things happen if there was a direct hit on the front corner of the cage and the dash bar deformed in a downwards manner. IIRC, there was a car built here in denver about 10 years ago with a bar in maybe a slightly lower area that was told to cut and move above the steering column (amongst other issues - wavy A-pillar bars being the worst offender).

I used lycra/spandex.

Yes, stretchy fabric. Weighs nothing. Easily removable, as I installed it with snaps/buttons. I added a 1/4" bar across the top of where the dash would be for it to form over.

It works, if you want out of the box. winking smiley
