The boxes we made in several pieces since we didn't have a deep throated brake. Top and front were 13g or around .090", the main sides were 16g or .0625. The front overlapped the sides, the top "shoe-boxed" over the sides and front. We had what? 4 holes so we could experiment with lowering front upper link. I think we added a strip with the same 4 holes for a little reinforcement around the bolt holes.. Bottom hole was nominally 6" from the top. Mostly 090 with reinforcing with 1/8th since it is exposed.. What car you fawkin wif? What shock? Ah gotcha, I thought the sides were made like the axle tabs where holes were cut out and then you jigged them up with a heim joint or bushing and then plated in the rear to tie them together. today i learned.
It's dave clark 2.0 old rally taxi, thought i would bring some life back into an old rally car, pretty much the story of all my builds. as for shocks, uh, chunk of steel tubing for right now. just getting it all laid out and sorted before committing to anything. Front looks like its going to be all 240sx stuff. them Japanese peeps, they much have gotten together, front bolt holes on the sub frame are a perfect match and put the wheel exactly where it sat before, who knew. drill, sleeve for the rear one and call it good for good brakes and steering, bam "Rally racing makes a heroin addiction look like a vague craving for something salty" |

Which Dave Clark? The New and Improved or the same ol' same ol'? What "rally taxi" (this is the 20 questions crap i was saaying earlier..Be more detailed, clearer--spelling we dun't give a sheet but "rally taxi " i don't know for nuthin.)
You oughtter choose a length. I suggest 26.9" c-c....9.3" travel. Maybe make a jig about 40% to 45% of that for your "mid-stoke average position".
Damn, about the only thing more annoying is the 2nd gen RX7 things---240 ears are all hiled up the tube.. I know what they're doing but it is annoying./. (RX7 ears are so short its scary...)
The ears are hiked up the tube I guess casue they have such a low hood and there for low strut top position, so the OAL is whatever.. You gotta say what car, and post some piccies sooner than later, more planning and consulting earlier is always better..Gives ya chance to see potential headaches. That would be the new and improved, dave clark the lesser, dave clark 2.0, seen them all.
You been around here long? (enter sarcasm) 1980 celica, pretty beat on, some life still in her, new long term project while going to school.
Noted
Well give me some ideas for something else that an all in one steering and lower links, I'm just using stuff I can find for cheap with some aftermarket support. The celica stock stuff is as bad as the first gen rx7 stuff, tiny and no real support. "Rally racing makes a heroin addiction look like a vague craving for something salty" |

My '84 Celica has proven itself pretty tough so far. Swapped to front Cressida brakes, '87 Vanwagon rear axle, stock lower rear arms, sleeved over with 1-1/4" tubing, with the axle end converted to heim joints. For the upper links, I chopped holes through the floor to weld in the boxes, made out of 1/8" plate, 3 adjustment holes for anti-squat, tied the boxes into the cage. The upper arm is just circle track stuff, mostly. (I just replaced two of the heims with urethane bushings from a hotrod shop.)

Yeah this old girl has seen some hard miles and put away wet. Part of the passenger side frame rail and shock tower is bent in from I think some love from a tree. Nothing a porta power, BFH won't be able to get straight. The downer side is this body style has the old "truck" style steering. Aka recirculating ball steering. I just don't dig it, sure it works, but it's kind of vague and over all no bueno. Then with brakes that mimic the size of tea plates, yeah it's all sorts of needing to be gone.
I think yours came with rack and peanut steering if I remember correctly. And if this one did too I would probably just try to sort out some better brakes and be done with it. But if your going to once again reinvent the wheel, might as well go all out right. Do you remember the spacing you put between your upper and lower body mounts? I'm thinking on the car side of things, if I had bolt mounts that were even to my axle side and then some that bring the upper and lower together to play with some squat stuff, I think I should be good on the car side. Or at least that's what I remember some old timers telling me about anti squat. "Rally racing makes a heroin addiction look like a vague craving for something salty" |

What you mean by "short"? I'm nearly done adapting WRX struts to RX-7 (because cheapskate) and the main hurdle was the longer than anything else in the world ears. 85mm when everyone else is in the 60-75mm range or so it seemed. At least the thickness was the same. Now the struts themselves, yes they're stupid short. I ended up running the WRX tubes down to the knuckle, will have to cut the top of the ball joint stud off for clearance.
