roof vent?

No, this isn't gonna be on stage any time soon, and, no, I'm not just trying to look cool. This is just my daily driver / rallycross beater.

My '85 Celica suffers from a severe lack of head room. With a helmet on, I can brace myself in the seat with my neck -> not good obviously. I have a lower profile fixed-back seat that I can install, but it's upright enough that it puts my head further into the headliner. So I'm cutting out the sunroof and welding in a fill panel that I already cut out from a non-sunroof car (will give me ~1.5" ). The cabin is small enough that it gets baking hot easily & the sunroof is/was an excellent way to get rid of that heat, so in its place I want to install 1 or 2 roof vents from Mill Supply.

So my questions for those who have more experience than myself (probably everyone):
- 1 bigger vent in the center ("G" 12"x5" door) or 1 smaller ("A" 9.5"x4" door) on each side? From what I've read, if you're going to the trouble anyway, 2 is better. Opinions?
- Which brings up another question, how to align them side to side? If I go with 2, should I center each one directly in front of the driver & passenger?
- How do the vents flow generally? With it open to the front, will it blow right in my face (meaning I should offset it from directly in front)?
- Aluminum or steel vents? Steel seems like it would be more durable, Aluminum more likely to get bent or distorted - am I wrong?

And just because every thread is better with pictures (thanks to the respective photogs)

Put your full name in your profile and I will answer your question.

The 85 Celica in my shop has a vent and tons of head room.

Done. I'm guessing the Celica in your shop either already had the sunroof removed or never came with one, correct?

Kieth,

The sunroof has been removed. The cage fits tight. The floors below the seats have also been lowered. Visibility over the dash is poor.

One steel vent will work if the air has a place to escape the car. The vents in the door jambs don't seem to work well. I have not gotten around to developing a better solution. I think that I will build some sort of filtered exhaust vent in the rear of the car. This is a hatch not a coupe like yours.

In your case, if you can find them, the Japanese and Australian markets had an additional vent instead of the light on the side of the rear 1/4 panel (google "celica jdm 1/4 vent")

I need to keep an eye out for some rear vents, for my next Celica... There is something to be said for using a roof vent to pressurize the cabin a bit, to keep dust out. There are plenty of small holes in the back seat area, going to the outside bottom of the car, if the side panels are removed.
