Use of ABS trigger for rally computer?
July 23, 2013 10:03AM
so i was looking at my probe for the terratrip on how it needs to read a trigger. Then i was looking at the factory abs sensor and toothed wheel. Then i wondered, why couldn't i perhaps modify the toothed wheel to be similiar in signal to the probes reading? I mean you have to calibrate the cursed thing anyway.

the probes seem similiar. the rx7 just has a two wire sensor.

might have to give this a whirl.

Too fine a resolution. Odo wants to see 4-6 maybe 8 good healthy manly pulses not 43 fine little protuberances.

(I was oafishal-Brantz guy for years and years and spoke with the Brantz guy about this very thing.)

May run into other issues, quick look says that the terratrip probe is a hall effect sensor/switch, your abs sensor could be a VR type sensor (Don't know the specifics of your car, at least some rx7's are). The two are not compatible and you may damage the terratrip by hooking a vr sensor to it.

If you could mount the terratrip probe so it's reading the abs tone wheel, that might work (couldn't find good specs on the probe) if you remove some of the teeth.

Go to a GPS sender for the Terratrip.

No sender to get messed up by gravel rash, makes it easy to move from car to car (for recce, as an example) and doesn't need calibration with a change of tires or final drive ratio.

Yah, it costs more than a traditional sender but probably has a longer life expectancy.

I know several people who've looked at picking up the signal from the ABS sensors - none that have been able to make it work. I'm not saying it hasn't been done, just that I don't know it to have been done.

Two wire sensor is most likely a VR sensor. So if the Terratrip requires a square wave (not sure, ripped mine out without looking too much at it) then you would need some sort of converter. And if it cannot process a tooth count like that, then you could start wacking teeth off (just keep the teeth symmetrical).

Or go the GPS route mentioned and never look back.

If you dig back a few years, I use to sell quite a few ABS adapters for rally computers. We developed and manufactured the electronics to convert the VR sensor to a square wave, then cut it down to a normal number of trigger events the ODO would like to see for a given wheel rotation. I still have the parts to build them, just no good way to test them out right now. (TerraTrip computer)

OP it is easy enough to set up a little bracket for the sensor to count the backsides of the wheel studs.

Monit sells one for their rally computer. I have no idea what single they are looking for as input on their computer.

Wow, looks like it's the exact same size as the PCB I had made. I just went to the extra effort to protect it in a small bomb looking case, charged like $45 shipped back in the day. If I knew people didn't care about protecting it, I would have just bought some fancy heat shrink too...
