Cheap rotisserie
July 28, 2007 11:59PM
How well would a rotisserie made from 2 engine stands work? With really big engine stands would it be possible to rotate the car enough to get at the bottom of the car to strip it/weld it/paint it?

Or is there a completely different idea that's alot simpler and works more betterer???

I dont want to roll the shell on it's side cause it's got really nice paint on the exterior.

That's what most people do, isn't it?

I'd connect the two stands together.

David, we used two large engine stands we bought off ebay. Made some beams that fit to the shell and bolt to the stands. We bolted the stands together with 1" tubing.

We were able to flip the car however we wanted, making shell prep much more enjoyable! :-)

Cheers! John

Great cause I just bid on some engine stands from a govt aution. I had already planned on the beam connected the 2. Just got to weld up some beams that'll bolt up to the rebar mounting points. Thankfully I can use a lift to get it high enough to bolt up. Then I'm gonna strap myself inside and let some carnies spin me around!

If you look in my LDR XR update thread, you'll see pics of the shell on stands.

Cheers! John

There's pics on my photobucket site that shows ours spinning. Made a pivot for one end that mounted to the workbench (a heavy steel layout table) and the other to an engine stand. Welded the receptacles with big heavy tubes onto the front and rear bumper beams.

Worked well. A bit tricky finding where to mount the pivots for correct balance. We were off a bit, but always had a tie down from above holding things in place.

Presumably if someone is going to make use of a rotisserie then they also have provisions for welding. In that case why go through all the trouble modifying an engine stand, when $80 in steel from the local yard and some zapping with the MIG will acheive a better result with less work and probably less money.

We used old rear axle hubs for the pivot on ours. The balance is adjustable by moving the hub up and down the "ladder" on the bumper mount adapters. The whole thing is raised from the ground with a farm jack. Holes drilled through the old brake rotors lock it off at different angles.

I'm making mine out of two engine stands. The rear is completed and I'm just about to go outside and sort the front out. My car has been sat in an open barn in Britain's rust friendly climate for 17 years and so is just a little bit rotten!
I'll post images when it's done.
For those of you doing sill work, don't forget to weld in some box section around the bottom of the door openings to prevent the shell from bending when you chop out the structural bits.

Steely self control.
The sort of self discipline that built the British Empire.
The sort of steadiness the the British showed at countless battles worldwide.
Omdurman
Rourke's drift
Balacava
the Somme
Dunquerke
Tobruk
Arnhem

Mark looked at the car and in that terse, under the breath restrained way said
"Steady............stEADY............wait for it......"

And the bonnet kept it's place and the thin Red line remained unbroken.

It's what made Britain Great.

Hahahaha! What John said- seriously!

Ok, so I lied a bit. It's just wired down with MIG wire for now, as the car spends much of it's time upright now.

As I'll need it to ensure all the front panels line up there seems no point in taking it off.
