I do plan to. John has to sell me a trans mount in the mean time though. After sleeping on it, this seems a little less unsurmountable. I may have a friend who's shop (barn) space I can use 2 hrs away so that helps. As I'm reading this, if I buy the turrets offered earlier in this thread, and mod the lower arms to link with the strut that would work out, but a compromise/ Not the toughest set up, right? Once caged, would a 4 link modification later still be possible? Or does the back of the cage weld to the same area as the link boxes? Enablers, All of you. |

Bob you can weld on the ears for the lower mount on the axle without disturbing the lowe or upper link.. In other words the turrets/tower and lower mount does not dictate any mods to the links. Tim Taylor made Al the custom link---and made the tower as he did BECAUSE HE COULD and to have fun... Don't copy that set up Al has on the link with integral mount. Al and Tim didn't think to think ahead when he kills one of those custom parts..and see that he did in service. Half the idea is that the links are straight off the shelf Circle track parts so cheap EVERYBODY can afford a spare $14.80 link and a couple of rod ends... And yes you could add links later...although the amount of cleaning and de-painting and all that shit isn't bad BEFORE cage but likely be daunting, and take more time--and therefore cost more---once the cage is in. And that means less chance of doing it. So you work more and it costs more---You buy shocks and springs now, and shocks and springs a second time. Makes no difference to me. It is better, but obviously other guys don't care if you have more fun and ultimately have a car that works better---and which spares cost so little. I'd suggest planning to never do it. You can think about it for the next car. If it gets to a point where you need some extra time or reliability after 5-10 events you can consider doing it. At that point you'll be so deep into this rally scene that you'll have friends with resources that can help. We do things everyday at our shop that I would have NEVER imagined doing during my first few years involved in this sport. John, I think you missed the part where Bob said his resources were: "I may have a friend who's barn space I can use 2 hrs away" "low level welding exp" "no space to work or welder" "prepping this Volvo in my aunts driveway, which is no longer available to me" None of that leads to heavy fabricating in my opinion. So, to do it thoroughly, What is involved?
2 Struts 4 links 2 turret boxes add the 2 link boxes to the body Lower links- on the body side I assume you need to cut off those ears and ad heim friendly ears and Axle mods: Cut and ad mounts for the upper and lower links at 12 and 6 Add strut mount at 12 Am I missing anything? Find Adam Crane's build...
Photobucket maybe. I don't think he had a write up but I recall lots of pictures. https://plus.google.com/photos/+ACrane/albums/5612567057800844161 https://plus.google.com/photos/+ACrane/albums/5827428193671758721 https://plus.google.com/photos/114714551954881142110/albums/5687712117332425457 I'm not sure where the original Patches album is but there was some good pictures in there and you can see and get some idea of towers, tabs, and 4 link shell mods from these pictures. This is the point where I started considering backing off some of the more exotic mods suggested here. I still want to do it, I just hate to put myself in a situation where I need to say 'If everything happens to go right, This will work' Thank you for all the links! I think I have seen a few, But more I haven't seen before, So it'll give me some reading material tonight. And to everybody who has responded here, Thank you. I'm sure you have all been over this a few times, So thanks for having the patience to answer my dumb questions. Enablers, All of you. |

there are no dumb questions, just dumb people who are afraid to ask.
Since he just got done doing it, maybe Pat could chime in and give an estimate of how many hours went into doing the full monty: adding strut towers, 4-link boxes, adding brackets to the axles on his Volvo Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 03/31/2014 06:17PM by alkun. |

I would say we have somewhere around 75-80 hours in the rear suspension alone. Now granted this is working on a very fractured/inebriated schedule but it was also with at least one capable welder, in a dry, lite, shop with most of the tools we needed on hand.
Your results may vary. Zap zap my ass... |

Ok, so I've re read some of this. Here is what I'm thinking...
If I buy the turrets, cut and install them than add the struts and mount them to the axle, I can stop at that point with out causing issues with adding links later, correct? I understand that later on with the cage in the way it will take longer, But I figure 'spreading out the pain' might help offset that. Patrick, what ate up most of the time? Turrets or links?
