Gene do you remember the rollcage in my Volvo?
Dave Clark certainly does. I'm not particularly eager to add a bunch of tubes to my cage such that it would not deform in an incident.
I prefer that the energy of a crash is not passed along to the contents of the car. As many are aware, I've tested the cage a few times in the past with good results.

Your thoughts?

Dave....Your thoughts?

Thanks guys. Sellholm goodness hangs from the right front corner. You all will want tissues.

John, unfortunately I can't remember the cage in my car...must be some pics I can look at somewhere though, not the ones in the ditch, on it's side, on it's roof, on it's other side though. Some before pics.

John, I'll have to refer to the rulebook but since your car is already logbooked I think it's already OK for RA rules for existing construction. Dunno about NASA. The seats have got to go, though.

NASA is grandfathering in cages for SCCA, etc. Just need 2 diagonal members (can be 2 in the main hoop or 1 in the main hoop plus one in the plane of the backstays), and sill bars will be required after July 1, 2008. Reference:

I've got one!

Is the halo hoop legal for NASA log books? RA seems to say its ok, but NASA's rules dont seem to mention it.

A halo hoop is not RA legal for new builds. Only grandfathered cars can use a front halo. New builds have to be per FIA specs, which don't allow it.

Hey, I've got a question!

for the roof bar, are they're any rules to where it can be? Does it have to be contained within the half lateral's bend downward? or can it be below that, and curved upwards to be flush with right above the windsheild? Heres a pic. The 1 tube ends up right over my head. The number 2 tube is right where im thinking about putting the bar. The blue is a very crappily drawn sketch of what i am thinking about doing.... and then i saved before i could fix it. MS paint hates me. The green lines are the approx start and stop of the bend.

Also, for the roof reinforcement, are they're any rules governing where tubes join? Do they have to be within a distance from the intersection of the roof bar and half lateral? Or can they be spaced inward a bit for head room?

Al...plastic windows...should be Lexan or some shatter resistant polycarb. Supposed to be the same thickness as original glazing. Rear 1/4 and back glass can be riveted, glued, screwed, mounted in original rubber or even dzus fastened.

I'm not a real big fan of plastic in the door side windows because it is very hard to break for an exit.

Timm... the header can be in any of those areas. You don't want it too low and block vision, nor too high and be against helmet. Leave room to remove and install windshields. Roof bars should be pretty close to the corners in order to trangulate properly.

To add to this Timm, if you get the windshield bar low, then the roof bars will become a problem in being low in the front. And, the idea is to put them in the joint where the lateral half roll bar and windshieled bar join, to act as a gusset. If you move them away from that joint, add a gusset. I would make the gusset join all 3: half lateral, windshield bar, and roof bar.

Mark B.
