Take a look at the new Black Rocket winter rally tires. Get them with or without studs. Tires take 4-5 weeks for delivery.

One should bear in mind that the rubber used for tire that are intended to be studded are ---in my experience there using rally studded tires---harder than hell so they will grip the stud..All real studded tires and this includes Black Rocket, have soooooper secret mixes of glue they use to glue the studs in and then the tires are re-vulcanized to set the studs in 100% securely..
When I was importing these a couple of hundred went to ice-racers in Maine---pretty high powered cars running hard and fast (hell first lap I did I did over 100 mph on the straights and I couldn't really see out cause of the fixed seat--and thats rpm vs tire not the speedo) 2 seasons and the guys said maybe 2-3 studs had spat out.. In motor-cross for studding we used either OLD Dunlops or Continentals, both we said then "made from worn out screwdriver handles"...we would never think about those tires for summer use since they were just too gawddam hard. I know people have used Michelin C5 unstudded for snow---and they did no better than me on Michelin L3s---and those were horrible compared to my street car Nokia NR09s in 165/80 x 15. I would be very very wary of using these unstudded... Perhaps for the guys where a little sanity prevails and some studs are allowed, they could forward the spec and the max size and that could be forwarded and get studded and glued in, maybe? would they glue in 135 studs per tire (per Canadian rules) and hmm, sipe the rest? then ship it over? I'd take 10 for Big WHite next year.

I think the big issue would be: The visible portion of each stud must be no more than 5mm in diameter, and any cross-section of the visible stud (as originally installed) must be perfectly round in shape, and must be of solid construction, not hollow. And I believe it is 130, but I always seem to hide my latest copy of the RallyWest regs... |

The WCRC rules for reference, a couple of items bolded. John, the 130 max came from the lowest stud count in the relevant provincial HTAs. Yep. So much "we gotta FIA this, we gotta FIA that we gotta blah blah" Then pick and choose just this and just that.. Kinda like when we all agitated to adopt the F-cup cc to weight thing which SEEMS to have worked so well and for so long.. Nope couldn't leave it alone, "they" know better.. Pfffft! A couple of factors led to the stud rules in western Canada. - A desire to stay within the lowest regulated standard withing the provincial Highway Traffic Acts. - Feedback from the competitors involved that showed they didn't really want to spend $1200+ on a set of special order rally tires. (in other words, how could we ask a 'clubbie' to spend what they'd spend on two local events on JUST a set of tires for one event.) - An understanding that 'WRC' studs cause a great deal of damage to the stage roads, particularly start lines, and damned near dangerous on paved roads. - That's how we ended up with commerically available street studs as a reasonable option. The amount of stud exposed isn't legislated, so the long studs are fine. (In reality, anything over 2.5mm exposed will get ripped out fast anyway) So if you don't like picking and choosing, if we adopted the cc to weight thing then you also advocate an outright ban on turbos? That's worked well for so long as well!
