Want to beat John Lane? Here's your best shot...
October 03, 2008 01:45PM
1985 Merkur XR4TI - $15,000
Spent the last three years building. Has successfully completed Rally Colorado, two hill climbs and three testing days and one rally cross with little to no problems. Never missed a competion run at the hill climbs and never failed to complete a run. Hate to sell but life is catching up to me. Between working full time , grad school, and having way to much debt at the moment I realistically can’t be racing rally cars. I’m also a little tired of eating peanut butter and crackers as many of my meals because I’m always broke. I've invested nearly $30K into building the car, not to mention hundreds and hundreds of hours of prep time/labor. I hate to part with it, especially at such a loss and as it's so close to being really, really cool. I built this car with the intention of having something fun and RWD that I could learn on, but would be fully capable of winning 2WD at any event in the nation. It's definitely there or really close right now as it sits. A little bit of work on the head and an ECU upgrade and it’d be well over 300 hp to the wheels. Reliably. Anyhow, here's the full specs.

Drivetrain/Cooling/Steering:
Ford 2.3T engine
Stock head
Rotated and ported upper intake
Relocated alternator and upgrade to 3G serpentine drive
Upgrade power steering system with remote reservoir and large Setrab cooler

Large Setrab oil cooler
50 mm thick aluminum radiator
Dual 11" 1300cfm Spal puller fans

Oil pressure and temp, EGT, water temp, and voltmeter VDO gauges
3" turbo back exhaust with 3" high flow cat comes with car. Flex pipe and v-band at end of downpipe for ease of removal.
Ford Motorsports M7003Z aftermarket, close ratio T5 transmission with steel bearing retainer.
Godfrey adjustable clutch quadrant
Clutchnet 6 puck race clutch with stock pressure plate
Fidanza 9 lb aluminum flywheel
Welded stock rear differential
New halfshafts w/ two additional new ones for spares
New wheel bearings all around before Rally Colorado

Brakes:
Demon Tweeks adjustable dual master cylinder pedal box. Reinforced firewall.
JVAB custom fronts with Wilwood FBSL 4X1.625 calipers on 283mm X 1.25" rotors and aluminum hats.
TCE custom rears with 11" X 0.81" rotors on aluminum hats and Wilwood NDL 4X1.125 calipers
K-sport Hydraulic Handbrake
Every line is teflon braided stainless steel. No hard lines left in the car
The braking system is nearly identical to the Sierra Cosworth WRC cars and the car stops like a rock star and braking feels amazing.

Suspension:
JVAB 41 mm Bilstein fronts, 50 mm Bilstein rears
MC2Racing nylon bushings on rear trailing arms.
Powerflex poly rear beam bushings
MC2Racing aluminum diff mount with poly bushes
Powerflex front TCA inner bushings

Wheels and tires
6 - Compomotive 15X7 et 35 with Yokohama gravel tires. Tire all used but fairly decent still
4 - Compomotive 15X6 et 25 with Michelin gravel tires. Total of 10 Michelin tires for fronts, all used but still pretty good.

Interior:
Custom built FIA 2007 spec roll cage with all required bars and gussets plus a few extra
Sparco Pro 2000 and Rev Plus seats
Sabelt lightweight 5 point harnesses
Fully flocked dashboard
Momo steering wheel
Custom gauge pack
Optima yellow top battery with 150 amp fuse on ground in cool Tim Taylor battery mount, sitting behind codrivers seat

Spares/extras:
Halfshafts, rear STAs, rear tranny housing, front hubs/uprights, full set of M14 race studs and nuts to upgrade from M12, both serpentine belts, a bunch of random sensors, relays, etc., two Supra clutch type LSD differentials with 4.3 final drive ratios and the JVAB adapters to go to Merkur halfshafts (JVAB is in process of building custom stronger rear beams to use these diffs), lots of brake fittings and some other random AN fittings and hose. T3 turbo, 3G alternator, spare bracket for alternator

Tools:
Harbor Freight 35.5" lift height super jack (awesome for using tall pin stands)
Correct sized socket for the stub shafts through the wheel bearing carriers (41 mm or something huge like that)
