Eli,

The new rally car is far from finished unfortunately. But, the cage looks right!

I PM'd you for more details on the 165 and 325 sets... Just curious if you had more info on the progressive nature of them.

Thanks!

Rabin,

They are dual progressive. They have a progressive section on both ends of the spring. It is actually quite trick: the spring changes wire diameter and pitch(to a smaller degree) until the main section starts. You can find pictures on various DMS retailers(Checkpoint Racing).

It's a Taper Ground Wire, and they are quite trick because they are true progressive rather than merely being progressive wind which depends on the tightly would part coil binding, and becoming a spacer, and leaving you with the linear part.

So the IDEA is excellent.

The problem with them is the lazy Australian bastards at DMS cannot be troubled to say what the rates of the progressive parts are.
Ford quoted three rates on the springs they supplied: full extention, mid range stroke where all the exciting action occurred, and rate at near full compression.

If Ford could, DMS could.

If they weren't useless in customer "service", and arrogant about it.

Good springs tho.

The problem is DMS probably does not know the rates of their own springs since they do not manufacturer them. I am pretty sure King spring is Australia is the maker of the springs for DMS.

I know the rear tarmac springs for my focus were Yellow and had King Springs painted on them. Called DMS and they said, "Oh, Yeah. Some of them come that way."

DMS springs are made by King. However, they should be thought of as a linear spring with a built in tender spring. That is why DMS does not provide rates for the progressive part. They are not effectively progressive. The taper wire ends are meant to be taken up (collapsed) at static ride height. DMS springs are really just linear springs for comparison purposes. True progressive springs are more difficult to tune shock valving to and get it right, especially when the end user can monkey with the valving (even to a limited degree.)

Great info - thanks.

Since it's difficult to determine what the static height is going to be from the lack of spring info - can you advise what kind of car these were run on and if possible the weight of the car in race trim?

Still pretty much a trial and error deal I'm guessing, so it'd be nice to get as much related info as possible to see if they're worth a try.

From what Dave stated about them being a linear rate - the 365# springs aren't going to be heavy enough (Need 500#) - but the 165# might work fine for the front.

DMS has the part number, which includes the spring rate, etched onto the springs. So, there is no need to guess what rate DMS intended these springs to be. That being said, how close these springs are to their intended rate, I have no idea.

These springs were used on a 91 Sentra SE-R(tried 4 different spring rates on eash end of the car). To answer Rabin' s question, I doubt that the 165s are stiff enough for the axle supporting the powertrain weight.

I wasn't questioning the rate of the spring really as it sounds like we can take it at face value - I'm just curious about the tapered spring part that acts like a tender spring since that would affect the loaded height.

Too many unknowns for me now though I think. It's on the back burner anyway - these just seemed like a really good deal if I could figure out they'd do the trick.

Out of curiousity - did you go with higher spring rates in the end or softer?

Rabin,

In the end I used stiff springs and straight rate(not progressive). The reason is that I had to get the car very high to miss all the SoCal boulders. This setup would not be necessary in non-Socal rallies.
