NOT MY CAR... reposted from.. http://merkursport.com/index.php?showtopic=16628

Car is located in Sarnia, Ontario, CANADA.

For sale is my XR rally shell - too many projects on the go to finish so it needs to be gone to make room for one I can race right out of the box! Not shown is a new NACS RS500 fg front bumper that goes with it. Cage alone cost over $4000 so the $2000 obo I'm looking for is a steal. Also have XR track car thats also going for $1000 that would make an ideal donor vehicle for this project. I have a car trailer for sale too - again pics to follow.

This was Patrick McVeigh's car, aka Paddy. There is a build thread on this forum if one were to search for it.
Rustly rockers were repaired. Cage was good, shell was seam welded. Basically a good starting position.

Those gussett will have to go, but that's a small bagatelle.

Yeah, door bars are not good and gussets are useless. But that can be changed.

There is no contact area between them. It doesn't help that those little flat plate gussrts are doing NOTHING. You hit a tree sideways in the door there hard enough and what little weld is there at the contact point between the two bends will just break and the bars will swing in because they are not in tension. An intersecting X is better because at least the main bar is in tension. I know this is the flavor of the month now with the two bent bars but it's not as strong. If you are going to do it this way you at least need a huge ass wrap around gusset the same thickness as the tubing. As it is the two bars are barely connected to each other and already pre bent to easily swing in.
Funny how Mike Hurst doesn't like Nascar style door bars that bend way out to the
door skin for the reason I stated above (I say that's OK because there is a lot more bracing with those and at least it gives you a big crush zone to absorb the impact) yet he prefers the door bar style pictured here in spite of his own reasoning.

Thise door bars ar fine. There is also a sill bar to absorb impact. The plate on the inside of the door bars would have to totally rip out all the welds before those bars hinge in. The plate is in tension as welded. I think the structure is good and better than the typical X which is only one bar thick in the center.
