Kerosene, or paint thinner. Scotch brite pads wet with the stuff, rub, wipe. Clean up with clean rags.
Get a good spot drill, you won't regret it. Hit the center of the spot with a center punch, makes life much easier.

I didn't make it out to the garage, but I did stop by Napa and snagged a spot weld bit with removable blades. I have very few welds to punch out but it would be nice to have a good one for future issues.

Thanks for the input on the kerosene. I'll snag some tonight.

Anyone ever turn up there own strut tubes? neighbor has a new lathe and is gung ho to use it. I figured why not try it out?

Lol John I figured why not try it out. Until you get your 50s in, I've got nothing. For the same cost as slapping a coilover sleeve on the stock tube he says he can whip up a sleeved tube. Why not let him try.

Another question. I've got the dude down at pacific steel telling me that their 1.5" schedule 40 is seamless and therefore the same as DOM

WHAT AM I SAYING WRONG?

After a bit of a marathon, my garage is a disaster but the car is wheels down. I finished the two piece suspension swap, reassembled everything but the motor and trans, and spent hours cleaning out sound deadening. The car is out of the garage for the first time in a year. (cant' believe its been that long)
I tried Johns trick of using orange hand cleaner and a wire wheel to get the remnants of tar out. It went pretty darn well. The wire wheel wouldn't fit my grinder with the guard still attached so it sprayed every where, and I'm missing a bit of hide from my left hand. Nothing a pair of hello kitty bandaid's couldn't fix.
The spot weld drill beat me up and ate my lunch. out of 20 spotwelds I punched through 7 of them.
Tomorrow I have to remove the windshield and rear window, and she is ready for a cage fitting on monday. 1.75 tube is on site, and 1.5 should show up monday evening.
I've got pics on my phone, I'm just not sure how to post them. without emailing them to myself, downloading, uploading, and then attaching to the post. Too much work at 1:00 am. I'm gonna grab a snack, a beer and go to bed.

AJ let's us stress for the dear readers here that the Orange Hand Cleaner is so we can use water and hose the shit off, not petroleum based solvents which sneak under seams only to reemerge when we'ze be weld-ang.
Bad mo-jo, mang.

Yes and pressure washed right off. Also saved a few brain cells vs kerosene

Got the foot plates bent up too.

This really sucks doing your first cage alone. The cost of the learning curve is going to kill me. Any suggestions for pattern materials for the a pillar bar?

AJ you hain't welding the boxes permanently are you?
You're 'spossed to leave tops off so the whole cage drops down and wait till you finish the welds on the TOPS of the tubes, then lift the age slide box tops in then weld box tops down.
