If you want a late model car that has a high fun factor, people seem to wreck the FR-S and BRZ's pretty quickly! There's no shortage at the auctions, most have under 5k miles and they go for $6-10k depending on the damage.

Rain gutters?

Where have I been? In the shed putting together a Suzuki engine with the parts you helped send over. thumbs up

OK school lesson begins.
Today's word is raingutters which is a noun.
Let's break the word down to see if this helps:
rain gutters, hmm that's the words rain and gutters.
Little Johnny Landingham quickly raises his hand as he has heard both these words before and manages to comprehend their correlation to one another. He explains to teacher that the rain falling from the sky is caught in the gutters whereupon the gutters direct the flow of water safely off the roof.

Excellent!! First part solved. thumbs up

Now little JVL (even though he is not a vee dubya dude) also knows that VW is German, that'll be zee same Germans that are renowned for over engineering and creating overly complex little nuances into some of their products...much to the disgust of those working on their products.

Homework for next week is to come up with some rational idea why the word "raingutters" when uttered by vw dudes infers some kind of issue....

Ok hard stuff out of the way, let's get back to Fiestas and rocket scienz.

Eh, the car setup isn't going to mean shit on your first couple rallies anyways. Don't waste your time trying to chase down the "perfect" setup when you haven't turned a wheel on stage yet. Far too many people spending far too much time and money trying to get "started" with the PERFECT setup, and either never make it to the stage, or just baby the car to finish, thinking that is something to be immensely proud of.

I hear you loud and clear and I agree that I am sure I am putting too much thought into setting up the car to some great ideal etc etc. I just need to get out there with a car and start my journey. The concern I keep going back to is that since I estimate I will probably only do 1 to 3 events per year at most I would hate to start a rally and then DNF after 2 stages due to some "weak link" in the mk2 golf that the entire world knows about.....and of course the ensuing looks of shame that I should have known better given all the info thats out there. I dont pretend to have a fully blown $50k golf some day (nor could I afford it) but I do feel that the upgrades and swaps that everyone keeps referring to are within my means and thats what I am after. As I mentioned, I have a ton of reading to do and info to collect and put together. I wish there was a list of some kind broken out by rough budget like "level 1" = all safety stuff + solid suspension (jvab or other), "level 2" = level 1 + mk3 front knuckles and hub + rear beam from mk3 + XXXXX..... It looks like I will probably have to do it on my own which is all good. I gotta get all this collective wisdom and consolidate it into one list or plan.

Which is fine if you are a self righting douche canoe, but for lesser mortals it means swimming with the fishes.
And on that note you better hope they ain't....pacu fishes.

Curious how many new cars and competaters have started ralling since the R2? How many stick around who knows. prolly the same as the guy who builds a $500 car and cant afford the expence to actually rally. I like seeing the new Fiesta out there I dont like seeing them kick my ass but thats not the car its the driver im proof of that.

Really i kind of feel that bashing any type of rallycar a new guy decides to buy is hurting rally more then helping.

9k for a running Fiesta not to bad priced if a guy buys it cages it and rallies thats the end goal. Trying to convince some one there dumb for spending there money on a rally car you dont like is going backwards. Every last one of us would drive an R2 if we had the chance so why bash it?

Not me, for R2 money I'd much rather be in something like Toni's M3.

I guess I meant more if it were free or event cost only $ to rally an event we all would run an R2.

Seems this thread went bad rather then good and informative. From cool good deal lets do it and it go on for pages about the build of the Fiesta R2 for less money then Oneals R2.

At the end of the day it seems that Oneals R2 program has been good for his business and good for rally in general. Not sure if we would of seen Reeves come over here if it wasnt for Oneals R2 program. And most rally drivers want more real fast guys to strive to beat. If the R2 brings good drivers then lets see more Fiestas!

If that were the case I'll bet everyone would jump in to just about any car for that deal. Except for stock looking merkurs...they're ugly. The ones with the big tails and single rear windows are ok. smiling smiley

Sean: I've watched your videos, and IMO the main thing you should be considering is finding a better gearbox for that Neon. Your gear ratios are miserable.

Yeah, the 2nd to 3rd is horrible. Either better gearing or 30-40 foot pounds. I really don't know where to look to improve on the ratios. Aftermarket like Sadev?

And just wait until the dealer tries to replace the non-stick raingutters on your new 85 Jetta GLI under warranty and apparently decides a ball-peen hammer is a necessary tool to get them to stay in place...and then has to pay to have the roof repainted and the raingutters installed again at the body shop!

Same dealer ended up taking two doors off a brand new GLI in the showroom when a service tech got T-boned bringing the same Jetta into the shop for another service. And because of all this dealer-inflicted body damage, the Jetta ended up getting traded for a new Merkur XR4Ti!

Lets take a second and talk economics. John assumes everyone who comes here is too poor to have a pot to piss in or a window to throw it out of. That simply isn't true. There is no way on the world a 1987 VW POS matches a 2010 or newer Fiesta for reliability. Better motor, better brakes, better engine management, better transmission and way better chance of getting some sponsorship. A 6000 mile car won't need an engine rebuild, transmission rebuild, new wiper motor and linkage, new wiring harness, new, new, new. The cost to build the rally portion will be the same for the most part. The cost of upgrading an old Golf to new Fiesta specs is substantial. Old VWS were pretty tired at 150k and they stink inside. getting stuck in the 1987 time machine isn't always the answer. The world has progressed since then, a lot. Cheap isn't always an economic winner.
