Finally found a rally Merc.
![]() http://ranwhenparked.net/2014/05/21/scaled-down-corgis-132-scale-mercedes-benz-240d-rally-car/ Oh. and I've got a extremely rare inlet manifold for fitting a pair of sidedraught webers to a Merc W123 model. Please form an orderly queue and submit your offers for the procurement of this unique purchase opportunity. Disappointingly not yet a Jackass |

My first rally car had a trunk lid mounted spare. Disappeared somewhere on stage the first night, Olympus '83, mount and tire...gone. Big assed holes left in the lid where the bolts and washers pulled thru. Must have been a sasquatch 'cuz I was nowhere near fast enough to fling it off from cornering forces.

Yup. I can think of at least two people off the top of my head who have tried rally and haven't liked it, went on to other motorsports. I have seen a few people over the years who quit because they weren't passionate enough to continue. I have seen people who completed building their cars and then never ran. It's hard for me to comprehend but it does happen. What bothers me the most about forums is that there is so much talking and very little action. You have to actually rally first before you can talk about it. To the O.P. go out and spectate, volunteer or rent a car. Then come back and ask questions.

Anders could shed some light, but I think the average is like 3.2 events in a lifetime.
I think one thing that scares people away is the learning curve. The current generation are taught to believe they have innate talents that make them instantly awesome. I've met many narcissistic wanna be future rallyists. Though these people often come up with good excuses to never actually build a rally car and compete, they can also be pretty downtrodden when they take 42nd place losing to a bunch of Golfs and lower spec cars. I have friends that rallied a couple of times then quit that said they couldn't get over the fear of crashing into trees. I've a few that couldn't balance the financial aspect. These guys often still spectate, rallycross, sweep, volunteer, etc. I'm at a point where driving isn't as important to me. I'm more focused on growth and sustainability than competing. I need to find time to focus on organizing now that we are rebuilding our competitor base. Grant Hughes |
