I think a lot depends on who showed up at the race that day, as well as who finished. I seem to remember a guy back east winning an event in one of this turboed Colt hatchbacks years ago.

Some people have really good reflexes and can drive twitchy cars. Anyone that can do well in a goofy car should really excell in a good handling car.

When someone in a MR2 runs down Burress on a normal day I'll be impressed. Still there is JVLs point about wrecking yard parts as well as spares at an event. Different cars is fine, but getting discouraged or only making an eveny every 18 mos is not so fine. Rally expertise comes with seat time, not searching for parts for wierdy cars.

Funny, I don't remember Foster ever winning a rally in the GTX yet he won the only rally he ran in the Evo...

Dave Kern here in Colorado did okay with his GTX and spent loads trying to keep up. He'd usually be the first or second car behind the big dollar Subarus. Then he built an Evo and has proceeded to break just about ever hill climbs record and is consistently in the top 5 times overall. Hopefully next year he'll decide to do more rallies. His sponsorship is all based upon hill climbs and Pike's Peak so he's been sticking to that.

Oh. Foster won one in the evo did he? Hadn't heard that. And Kern kicked butt once he got in a real car?

Bummer.

Makes me even more wanna find out what a real rallycar is like, and in this climate, that is even more unlikely than it was.

Sorry to be so late in responding to this. Sometimes I actually have to do my job.

I think all of Ross' truly inspired driving was done in the GTXs. We didn't have the results because we threw away a lot with lack of car prep or crap tires.

At our last rally together (Doo Wops '04), in a GTX, we finished one stage (Pico counter clockwise). The engine died on the straight at the end of the stage and would not turn at the finish control. We were 7th overall.

I still haven't seen this myself, but Manspeaker says that we were featured in a "you've got to see this" segment on a Canadian sports program. This was in the GTX from Bighorn or Rocky '02.

We won the Helmer stage in Merritt in the GTX (PGT/P4).

His win didn't come until the Evo because Pete Van Bogart was doing the prep and after each service we had fresh (or freshly cut) tires.

I think Ross' biggest problem driving the WRX and the Evo was that he knew what the repair bill would be if he went off and usually didn't commit like he did in the GTX.

One thing that should be remembered is that it is not a MR2. It is a tube-frame silhoutte car.

Here's another example of the advanced engineering that went into the Lancia Stratos.

Yeah, that way there's room for both the driver's AND the codriver's foot on the pedal at the same time!

Old Finnish wife's tale...Big gas pedal = big danglers. smiling smiley

Decent pedal size, lots of pedal travel and full throttle operation are often overlooked elements of racing.

Not by me!!!!
What I overlooked is the lack of a tunnel in the floor and just how hard Dave Clark's size 14EEEE Doc marten clad footsies could mash on my foot when he starts getting nervous as I go diving deeper into corners than he was used to.

I later made a nice co-driver footrest he could stomp on when the pucker factor sets in.
