I'm guessing Langbein and Mulvey are also DNF since they are missing the last three stage scores.
Makes it: 24 cars finish, 3 with JVAB Soooper Bitchin Suspenders...ca 12.5% 41% DNF rate... any ideas why? Results not in the universally acceptable format? 84% of cars started on something OTHER that JVAB-SBS :-) Looks like 4 stages dropped for the cars, 2 for bikes. We are well chuffed with our results and very pleased with the JVAB SB-50s. Haven't taken the car off the trailer, so no post rally inspection yet. But they peformed very well, especially coming down off so many jumps. It's hard to describe the feeling when you've got air and the car comes down and stays down and just goes! No bouncy or recoil. Sweet.
Day 1 was was very wet and the usually firm stages turned to mud-slush in places making for just-keep-it-on-the-road-dammit type driving. Day 2 was much better and the Goose Pond jumps gives you Goose-Pond-Bumps just recalling them. The USUK Racing Frankenpreza was just dancing down Jayville and Fullerville. Fun, fun fun. This was our seventh run at Black River Stages (6th finish). Add BRS to your bucket list people. Simon Simon Wright Owner/Driver USUK Racing - Home of the USUK Racing LED Light Bars! Yes. Mostly mechanical of one sort or another. Only 1 decent crash that I know of. AFAIK, 1 dropped saturday for bikes, 3 dropped saturday night (last 3) for and cars and 2 dropped saturday night (last 2) for bikes. Reason getting late, raining all day, roads getting torn up and would possibly piss off the local townships. 1 dropped Sunday for cars because of a problem with a local. Don Kennedy |

Glad you enjoyed it. It's one of my favorite places to visit, working or competing. BTW, if you ever get the chance, go exploring along the creek in the first part of Jayville. My wife and I stayed an extra day the other year and did. There's some great water falls along there. Don Kennedy |

I had an awesome weekend. We finished the race and had a blast doing it. If there was a podium for amount of fun had, we would have been on it. Can’t complain for my first gravel rally. Saturday was real slick and I spent more time sideways than I was trying to but man was it fun. Even passed a few people. Gave one team a tow out of the ditch. The windshield fog sucked. We got lost on virtually every transit somehow but managed to show up on time. Sorry if you were following us. It’s a good thing they cancelled the last couple stages Saturday night because while pulling into our campsite the alternator mount gave it up, broke both lower mounting tabs, and we lost charge. Probably would have caused a dnf otherwise. After fixing it with a stick and some tape we decided to try and head over to service early the next morning to find somebody to weld it.
We ran late but found somebody willing to help us weld it if need be. Because I didn’t think we had the time to fix it, I risked it and ran the stick figuring I’d take it easy over the jumps and if it didn’t hold up we would dnf, go back and get it welded, and then finish whatever was left. I melted the vacuum line off the waste gate on both of the turn around stages. Pretty thankful for the over boost cut. First time I thought it was a fluke but the second time I realized we didn’t have a cool off drive and that’s what was doing it. Drove both those stages pretty much half throttle. The stick held until about 30 seconds into the last stage. My lights were flickering and things were funny but we finished the stage AND managed to make it back to service. I was supper pumped the stick made it just long enough. Because it ran so late we had to pack up and get out of there as soon as possible, next time we are taking the next day off from work as that was a long weekend. I drove pretty conservative. I don’t think the slick conditions favored rwd. There was one section on day 2 where on a straightaway I got into quite the tank slapper…would have been embarrassing to have crashed on the straight. Haha. I look forward to being able to trust the notes. The suspension worked good, thanks John. You need to put up a suspension maintenance thread so people know how to care for their boingers. Thanks to everyone else who helped out and thanks especially to everyone who volunteered!!! We wouldn’t be racing without you!!!!! |

Hi Mark, sorry to hear about the alternator mount breaking.. When I handed over a sample to William I stressed that he should just copy it as it had been fabbed up on a motor with hoses in place, exhaust manifold and turbo in place and material copied from an old GpA Ford one I had bought expressly to have a sample---albeit for a YB cossie---but the important thing was a THICK 3/16" backing plate and ears and gussets and strenthening tabs made in 1/8".
It was kinda complicated but positioned alternator so it lined up low---away from exhaust manifold---and in line with crank pulley so the belts would do a good wrap around the alternator pulley and a real good more than 90* wrap around the water pump pulley. And a separate single belt with nearly 180 wrap around the PS pulley.. Of course every single detail was changed.... There are parts chopped up for an improved version of the thing downstairs..3/16" mostly.. As for mostly sideways, I know Sean was doing a lot of that, boilin the tires until just prior to selling his car to the New and Improved Dave Clark.. After some one on one time with Derek Nelson--the guys who justy won Idaho and Nameless rallies---he began to see that it was much quicker leaving the car a gear higher and letting the motor pull than downshifting and screamin it and thrashing around in 2nd.. And calmer too. John Vanlandingham Sleezattle, WA, USA Vive le Prole-le-ralliat www.rallyrace.net/jvab CALL +1 206 431-9696 Remember! Pacific Standard Time is 3 hours behind Eastern Standard Time. |

No worries with the mount. I figure it must have flexed itself to death. Just glad the stick held. When I fix it I’m just gonna make the tabs thicker and maybe throw in a gusset or two.
The sideways thing was mostly the rains fault and not my right foot. Haha. It was pretty bad out there. On Saturday night there was one straight, I think I ended up catching and passing a guy through it, I was going down it and sinking in so much that I was like “I don’t know if I’m going to get to the end of this thing….†Hahaha. I figure I’m giving up most of my time not committing for corners. I’m letting off early and not braking hard and I just ease into everything. In other words, I don’t know how to brake. When my co-driver and I gain a little more confidence we should be quicker. And we also need to start going through and getting rid of the stuff in the notes we don’t need because it isn’t helping us. And I need to start calling out obvious landmarks to help him know he is on the notes. Oh there is so much room for improvement….. And none of this is to take away from the guys in the front, they are fast as hell. |

Sorry for the late reply on this - came back to work Tuesday to a mountain of BS to deal with...
Want to publicly thank John for making some updates to my rear struts on short notice before BRS - I had bought them from him in 2008 while building my car to be FWD and over time came up with some ideas that I wanted to try. He made it happen and the car was superb. A few more tweaks to my JVAB Bilstein setup and I won't even bat an eye at those pricier options. Rob and I are very excited about the unexpected win. Considering that it was both the cars and my debut on gravel with AWD I think there is a lot more to come for next year. Very sorry for what happened to the other leading teams - I hope everyone is back for Sandblast next year so we can actually race all the way to finish. |

Thanks Colin, appreciate that--especially in light of all the rampant trolling by a few here.. This idea of some continuing tweaks, that's how we're 'spossed to do things. Start with something basically "pretty damn good" which is my goal and should be the goal for what we all do in all areas, and from pretty damn good, we make little tweaks, little adjustments and make "a little better pretty darn good" Now the next thing is trying out these damn "tender" springs I got at like 65 lb/in and see if that makes a noticable improvement and no drawbacks.. So to make room or allow easier fitment in the next round of lower spring seats I'm making the things like I do the rear with the raised up thing---longer so that we can try and skip the nylon spacer/locator thing and not have the main spring get dislocated.. Talking with Simon yesterday I told him about the idea I've done on some victim 40 lower seat where I cut a groove to try out a square section O ring---toooooooo tight to easily turn the thing, so i said we're gonna try groove on the ID at the top and we'll blob in silicon seal, then assmble quickly.. The idea is is doesnt bite on the metal but its a barrier to the dirt raining down and into the threads and it will set up with threads in to and theoretically move.. Progress never stops! ONWARD and UPwards--or sideways. What's next for you? John Vanlandingham Sleezattle, WA, USA Vive le Prole-le-ralliat www.rallyrace.net/jvab CALL +1 206 431-9696 Remember! Yep saw it but been scambling to track down springs sent to a poor bastid in Canada which i sent to the address in his Paypal and he's moved.....only 15 minutes but time is short. I have to zoom but I'll get back and write you. Yours being an 05 is now problem, Colin changed to 05 knuckles (a smart move, everything is heftier) and the guy in BC above has an 05 so it's only the top mounts that are slightly different...no biggie... By the way the thing I did like overnight for Colin was to make some cute spherical bearing top mounts for the rear to try and mitigate the bending forces when the rear arcs upward and to some degree arcs forward.. That seems to be a smart idea so I'm thinking maybe we ought to consider that as a standard thing at least in the rear..adds some cost but if it is more reliable its worth it.. Having the top bolted rigidly means the bending forces as the strut makes its arc are going be resolved somewhere: bushes or ears or the top pin.. Congratulations to Colin and Rob! Colin drove a very clean (except for what looked like a few moments on Fullerville- yes we saw your tracks!!!) event- Jeremy and I had a great time chasing you guys. Our R+P gave up the ghost with 3 stages to go- I wish we could have tried to keep you pushing till the end, but it wasn't to be for us. The 020 trans in the Wimpeymobile had over 40 rallies on it, and towed Josh's donal duck trailer back and forth from VA to CO numerous times as well, so it was...umm...well loved! Colin- well deserved, and a great drive!
