The GSX actually got turned into a rally car by a buddy of mine and seating position was miserable.

i seem to remember one 3000 gt (cant rmemeber if it was a vr4) back in the day. i wanna say it was out at an old Doo Wop. I think he showed it off, then later that day nosed it into a tree. If i remember right he didnt even have it paid off. I think that was the first and last time ive personally seen one in rally form. Ive seen a few in road course form.

only pic i could find of it. but youd recognize dat ass.

I was just thinking about the car that Max is referring to. I remember that the guy still had the payment book in the glove box!

The 3000GT has interior space problems. This would be made worse buy our modern cages and HANS devices.

The Galant was a great rally car. I crewed on a factory built car in Kenya for two rallies. The rear wheel steering was locked out.

just about $7k deep when it headed out for the roll cage....of course costs went up from there.

If the OP is thinking about a 3000GT VR4 because he can get them for cheap, he should probably instead look for a Subaru Legacy to build as a rally car.
I mean, you can always do a STI swap a few years in the future if you think you want to start spending your way into Open class. winking smiley

An S10 Blazer with a V8 would be another option, more room, real frame, about the same weight well less wait tho..spinning smiley sticking its tongue out

I know where there is a GR4 Galant for sale, very decent car with fresh everything (engine/trans) and tons of spares for around $4k I think.

Dennis Chizma rallied a 3000 VR4 in 1996 and 1998.
He did OK with it, despite it being a massive heavy pig of a beast.

good starter Evo's can now be found in the $5k range.

Where.

I can't find anything under $15k and that will get you some horribly modified POS.

Alls I wants is an Evo VIII RS that is bone stock. It's okay if it's all rusted, that just means I won't feal bad about playing with it since it won't ever be a museum piece.

On second thought, don't tell me where. I'll be $6k in the hole when I'm done putting the Quantum together. I don't want to find out that I could have just bought an Evo.

I picked one up in omaha in January or February. Was a friend of a friend hookup, the car was never listed for sale. Somewhat modded but engine has been good so far other than not passing emissions. Everything worked but the gearbox and I had to tow it home.

I have a feeling I may stumble into another one here shortly, but would need to find a good shell to make one whole car. Not sure I have the time for such a project this time around though.

I've seen several in the $10-12k range on craigslist locally and have heard about other guys getting cheap stuff with flood damage. I'd imagine salvage title cars should routinely be in the $5k range these days. I don't see much wrong with starting with one of those, as that's what I did with mine.

The cheapest I've seen so far was $8k for a GSR that was a bank repo and the rear quarters were rotted off around the wheelwell like an Impreza.

Of course it hasn't been all sunshine and roses. After replacing the gearbox and transfer case I started hearing a weird noise:

So, I'm thinking time for indestructo rally wheels...which means I need to de-brake the car.

Dennis himself called it a large and heavy beast. I recall talking to him about it in around 2000 it sound like it was OK - OK is not my target when I start projects that will cost me lots of time and money.

No problemo, if your Quantum is nice, I will buy it from you :-)
