Yeah. That's tough. I knew a guy that had been a pilot for United for like 30 years. Pretty high up, was flying the Chicago to London route. Had a heart attack in his mid-fifties and boom. Career over. He ended up going into real estate but you could always tell he wasn't really happy with it. At least you're still young enough for a career change and conveniently old enough to have a clue what you might want to do. I would think something like operations research if you can handle the math or logistics would share some of the same skill sets. Operations Research is way cool. |

Which do you want more? To have work i the field you want, or to play with guns? How many playthings must you have? There's rally cars, that's one. Evidently guns, that's two. I thought I read there's more guns per capita in Canada, just that they're hunting rifles or maybe self defense against moosies. Fawkin moosies would take over the place if they aren't shown who's boss. Ever heard of prioritizing? i would live without the guns (folks just like in ohio anyway) if any job came through of it. But getting a job is the only way i could get to stay in the country in the first place. Their skilled worker program requires that or a fair amount of money saved to show financial stability.
only issue might be having to know French, which i dont, for Quebec. |

You can get along quite well in Quebec without knowing any French. But you have to stay in Montreal or near. In regions, you will be able to communicate in English, but only for basic things mostly.
You should talk to Matt who's on this site about it. He seems to be doing good and doesn't speak French. We have a lot of rallys in Quebec! 5 regional events and 3 of the 6 national events. Pine is not that far too so that's 8 or 9 events in a reasonable towing distance. And about guns, well if you don't want some auto or other crazy shit, you should be alright. The federal government just killed the gun owner registry so that's one less thing to worry about. But the provincial government now want his own registry... But by looking how it goes for other projects, that won't be in place for a few years. Francois |

French language is certainly facile. The derivation of the majority of the vocabulary is decended via our cousins the French. The above bit was mainly French derived words John Vanlandingham Sleezattle, WA, USA Vive le Prole-le-ralliat www.rallyrace.net/jvab CALL +1 206 431-9696 Remember! well, for ATC reasons, i would likely be in Ontario, since Quebec seems to want dual language abilities. Which seems fine to me. We have considered just moving up and seeing how it pans out as well, perhaps go to college there. My wife does get a US gov. stipend, that would continue if we moved. But it just seems harder to stay in country without any work lined up.
How is Ottawa? or the cities surrounding Toronto? I could likely keep a student Visa going for awhile as well. Im really just keeping my options open for anything at this point. My only real question is the differences in how things "go" there. Like the health care system, i know nothing about it. Any other unusual laws or practices. Seems as though i can own some cars the states would frown upon. how are fuel costs? |

I lived for 5 years in Gatineau (Hull) right across the bridge from Ottawa.
If you like nightlife, going out to different bars until early morning and stuff like that, you will find it boring! I once tried to find a nice restaurant at around 9PM on a Sunday night in downtown and could not find any! Had to settle for a semi fast food type of thing. But it's a beautiful city with a lot of waterfront parks, bike path, museums, etc. If you like camping, fishing and hunting there's a lot of good places with a minimal driving distance. Go north on the Quebec side for about 30 minutes and all you see is trees! Oh and it's about 1h30 from Perce-Neige which is to me one of the best rally in North America! Gas prices are around 1.20$ to 1.30$ a liter right now. Around 4.50$ a gallon! I can't say anything about the Ontario health care but in Quebec (and I believe it's the same or close) almost everything is free except you almost always have to wait. If you have the money or if your private insurance pays for it, you can skip the waiting by going to a private clinic. I know nothing about Toronto's surrounding except that there's good salmon fishing in Lake Ontario! I do believe it's more expensive than Ottawa. Francois |
