Blatz Beer? Homer's favorite....

Beer ain't the NEXT thing gonna save rally, beer has always been the fuel that events and speccies and crews run on!

Nah. It's the famed "rule of seven".
Once you convince seven people to come stand behind some yellow tape to spectate it's only a matter of time til $$$.
See so we give those seven people a "card" that will give them rewards for bringing additional people next year. Next year we charge $2 for entry. Each of the seven people get $1 rebate per person they brought with them. We give out cards to all the new people as well. The following year we charge $1 for entry, the year one people still get $1 for each new person they bring plus $0.50 per person that someone they brought last year brings with them. And the second years get $1 for that person.

I just did some quick calculations aka made up some numbers and based on this scheme and a few assumptions that would make wall street look like speculators, I figure by year five we would have enough revenue to pay all rally expenses, provide a tow fund, and the original seven would not have to work at JiffyLube or Burger King anymore and would make well over the median salary of their fellow UPers and their only job would be to make sure more people come and stand behind the yellow tape to watch cars drive by. See that really enthused guy with the blue hand. Yeah, you'd never guess that five years from now he'd be rolling through Houghton in a Delorean. He bought that with his rally earnings. The guy next to him has a cabin in the woods with a sauna AND he just installed his own bathroom in his parent's basement where he lives most of the year. Living large...

According to some post-rally conversation, the average yooper needs 2.5 deer (roadkill acceptable) and 80 lbs of potatoes to survive the winter. I'm not sure where that fits into your ponzi scheme...but it might help to plan your rewards appropriately.

Next big thing to save rally: Profitable sanctioning bodies.

I saw a stat once that it's estimated that 100,000 deer become road kill every year in Michigan. That's alot of winter dinners...

yea about that

That has been the problem all along: the corrosive mentality that everything is a business.

The whole rest of the world knows the driving force is beer-fueled passion.
WRC events are consortium of clubs--volunteer organisations, volunteer officials, volunteer crews.

Too many parasites in North America feeding on too few barely warm bodies. (How's that for a morbid Halloween segue?)

It's about as bad as political discussions, completely circular, nothing changes.

Rally. But there are an interestingly large number of parallels between the two. And actually, a lots of lessons in both directions.
