so instead of moving to canada, you can live in idaho.

I grew up in northern Idaho, and was driving amazing roads since I was 12 (started on a dirt bike). Most of them were gated off...would just take some work to get permission.

However, I didn't hear of rally until I moved to the midwest and bought a blue Subaru.

Now there aren't any gravel roads within an hours drive.

CARS does sell seperate driver/nav licences. Terry Epp stated that there were just over 400 unique drivers last year (unless he meant licences overall, but I swear I asked him to clarify and he said drivers...

Wow. Well, there's the answer to that then... Canada has more rally drivers than the United States. Around 25% more than we do.

By the way, this discussion is really great, I appreciate being able to hear (and hopefully understand) better the issues facing rally in North America. I think we are in agreeance Anders on that sometimes the WHY is just nowhere to be found.

The question of what is going on and why is complicated by its large size (how do you figure out the motivations of 1000 people) and its small size (people doing 2 or 3 events a year, 30ish events, these numbers are so small that one wonders about the statistical validity when as a researcher you know of many exceptions and reasons for what happened at one or the other events or person).

Bottom line, it's complicated. Simple solutions, as appealing as they appear, are unlikely to provide a silver bullet. I'd prefer to try 10 new things, have half of them work, and have each one of those successes add just 5-10% to the number of racers at an event.

Cheers,
Anders

Do more people in canada drive on dirt / gravel roads as part of normal life activies?

like are there more communities that aren't paved?

I wonder how many of the current north american drivers (both side of the border) have driven on dirt roads during their youth? if the post office is on a dirt road, chances are you've driven a dirt road more than someone who grew up in LA, vancouver, or any other big city..

could be there's zero relation ... but I'm currious now...

From local polls, I think getting contraception covered on all insurance plans would be a good start.

The next thing that will save rally is... 50 free condoms every time you renew your rally license!

It just might work! winking smiley

Catch 22. People have babies, sell off all their rally gear and dissapear but we also need to grow the rally population.

Once you start rallying, instant rock star status is guaranteed. Rally drivers would use up that stash in a month!
