So starts the build of my omni. This thread will be for updates, costs, pictures, etc. Technical questions will not be found here!!! unless its so interesting "the more you know!" type stuff.
Background!!!!! Basically i bought the car over the summer on a whim. A few of my friends have turbo dodges, and i found the omni to be the most fun of the lot. Only broke down once on the way home too!!!! The car is a 1985 Omni GLH turbo model. One of 1,300 or so in Blue. Its a "T1" car which means, no intercooler, crappy induction, crappy fuel control, etc. Only benefiet is it has a nicer turbo design. Probably, because larger turbo runs cooler and having no intercooler makes for problems. The later mitsubishi units, like the one that came off the 89 block i have going into it are crap. Anywho, we played with it, did some rolling burnouts, etc. Lopped the exhaust off. Spun a bearing first time down the track.... ...so now, im planning on rallying the sucker. As the car sits right now.... ![]() ![]() ![]() Finished the flywheel about an hour ago....had to take 50 thousands off the cursed thing.... *NOTE* The 85 flywheel and 89 flywheel are NOT the same. i tried using the 85 wheel on the 89 commonblock motor but the 85 uses 6bolt holes and the 89 uses 8. Thankfully, my friend has the right flywheel in his garage. ![]() The clutch is a T2 / T3 hybrid clutch that we have used for drag racing applications and held high 11 second 1/4 miles. The nice part is the clutch and pressure plate are just factory parts. Although im not sure if the original stuff was Valeo or not... As you can, see below, i have a nice pile of parts ready to get the motor back into the car. the hangup was the flywheel so i can start getting the bottom end in to reattach the front suspesion so i can push the car around again. ![]() What your looking at is an 89 2.5L motor from the LeBaron. Its a T2 intercooled motor. got it for 170 dollars from the junkyard including the manifolds and turbo. Not a bad deal seeing the clutch cost me about 180....Also the 89 uses roller rockers (very nice) but the 85 head is a better design so we are swapping the parts between them. Plus my 85 cam was completely swipped out... the 89 longblock had a blown headgasket. Specially on the #4 cyclinder which is the cyclinder of choice when these motors have problems. But nothing bad occured the bottom end. So just some minor cleaning of the cyclinder and the motor is ready to get the head put back on. I just need to order the head gasket and head bolts from Moparpreformance. Seeing Dodge basically gives you parts (they're really cheap) i shoudl be getting them soon. Costs so far: Omni GLH turbo (running at the time): 1200 T2/T3 clutch combo: 180 shipped 89 2.5L turbo longblock: 170 ~A.M.S. "Some people are afraid of heights, not me. I'm afraid of widths" |
Excellent! Glad you are putting your car into it's natural environment! Like in another thread, get ahold of Henry Krowlikowski; he is somewhere in the Detroit/Ann Arbor area and was tops in these car in the 80's and in the Turbo Shadow in the 90's. I expect you to find a pix on our RallY WV to find a sutiable 'vintage' paint scheme to replace the 'peel as you watch' primered blue!
Good luck and get it ready! Mark B. |

Well since that is about as good as anything you're likely going to find what the hell! Glow with the schmo! Er Glow with the flow! Now this is something that 15 years ago wasn't such a problem when there were low cost things right from Doodge,(rhymes with Stoodge, eh)(all car get a special name here at Rally Anarchy)(it's known as "the Oafish-al" name, lets us know it's a rally car were talking about, see?) now, different story unfortunately. omni GLH = worldest fastest trash recepticle AKA dumpster
Dodge still has alot of cheap preformance stuff for the car but its most engine related anymore. But i really cant argue with 14 dollar head gaskets. ~A.M.S. "Some people are afraid of heights, not me. I'm afraid of widths" |

Yep, its like 14 bucks for an Xratty head gasket. Retail. That's one reason I push them. Used to push GLHs when there were Omni around for under a hundred bucks.
