May be the same guys as I got a bunch---6-7---for guys some years ago.. Everybody opted for 4.47 except one guy who got 4.2 and immediately regretted in.. 4.2 barely corrects for the taller gravel tire versus the dumpy street tires. Doesn't seem the best way to spend money and the R&R time to end up in the same place as a stock road car... Watch them on the VAT..No VAT on export. Go 4.47 minimum . Maybe get some bearings and seals at same time---good prices on that. John Vanlandingham Sleezattle, WA, USA Vive le Prole-le-ralliat www.rallyrace.net/jvab CALL +1 206 431-9696 Remember! Yeah for sure, 4.25 is on the high side with the stock ranges, but if this is good quality stuff it may alow for a more affordable swap to some of the MTS or other VWMS 1-5 gears and not have a pinion that winds up having such a tiny tooth count. It amazes me that some of these super low final drives stay together with the shock loading they get exposed to.

The MTS gear options for 3-4-5 seem to only need a 3.89 or 3.94 final drive to make good ratios. In fact, the taller gearing makes 1st gear more useful than a 4.xx would. The 3.89 gies you a near 40mph first gear with only a baddish drop to second with 3-4-5 nicely spaced up to 115mph top speed. And, YES, the super low ratio FDs are more prone to failure. If you search this site, you might find some evidence of this from 6+ years ago with the 4.64, 4.8x, and 5.xx FD exploding for a few people. ____________________________________________________________- One. Just been looking at this VW gear and final drive thing...I know there's lots of opinions BUT
Usually the first thing I do to clarify schtuff is to think: what is the coolest car in human history? Well we all know it its the Escort, either MkI or MkII in proper Group 4 spec.. Ya know the thing Haydon Paddon used just a few weeks ago to win a round of New Zealand rally Chamionship overall---beating every turbo 4WD car including Ben Klock---arguably the fastest guy active in North America--- So what do we see in their gear and final drive numbers? A variety to be sure but heres some typical numbers Gear.......................final drive..................overall ratio I) .....2.29......................5.1..........................11.68 II) ....1.55......................5.1.............................7.9 III)....1.16......................5.1.............................5.9 IV)....1,0........................5.1.............................5.1 V).....0.86......................5.1.............................4.37 Ok that's cool, works fine, decades of proof, not opinion Old VW so called "8v Gearset" matched that except the fastest guys used 5.08 final drive Then in 1988 same time as Opel came out with their SOOOOPER BITCHIN GM/Xtrac 6 speed and jiggered everything to use around 4.2 final, VW jiggered their stuff and called it "16V gearset" and 4.2 or 4.25 was the thing So can one replicate affordably something kinda similar? Well lookie dis: Stock--on some year marked* Gear.......................final drive..................overall ratio I)....3.45.*................4.2...........................14.5 II)...1.9*...................4.2...........................7.98 III)...1.44*................4.2...........................6.04 IV)...1.17................4.2.............................4.9 V)....1.03..................4.2............................4.32 Now comparing it to know very good, looks like with a cheaper 4,2 and just 2 gears from Germany you have a complete box/final drive that will allow a hotter engine with higher peak torque and not fall on the face on gearchanges even in the uper range where n.a. cars suffer so much 7000 in 4th w 60cm tall tire = 97mph 7000 in 5th w 60cm tall tire= 111mph That would be typical 14" tire With the greatest tire in recorded history for clubbie guys under 200hp, the famous 14-62 x 15 Michelin 7000 in gears would be I)............35...........aka 56 km/hr II)...........64...........aka 102 km/hr III)..........84...........aka 132 km/hr IV)..........103..........aka 165 km/hr V)...........117..........aka 188 km/hr Pretty gawddam good.. Oh and "Tran-x" gears makes a good clutch plate LSD cheaper than Gripper by a coupla hundred bucks.. This is getting somewhere now, no reason a good LSD and sensibly spread gears need to cost $2500 in a 200hp car.
Right now I have this trans:2Y* 2Y(16v) 3.67 FD 1-3.45 2-2.12 3-1.44 4-1.13 5-0.91 And this trans: ACH 3.94 FD 1-3.45 2-1.94 3-1.37 4-1.03 5-0.75 Power means nothing if you cannot control it! |

Ok lets try this.
If I read the wording correctly on the Tran-X Diff price here it says €675 including 21% tax, now if its €533 plus shipping its a screaming deal around $750 CDN plus shipping.
