what kind of lube does JVL use?
September 11, 2008 11:37AM
I'm on my way to a track day tonight and when changing tires I noticed the seal on top of my inverted struts (JIC) had popped off. When I get back, it's gonna be time to clean and re-lube the struts. What kind of grease should use in there?

Here is what I use on my DMS struts. It is good enough for CV joints should work for struts. You can use the synthetic stuff if you want a wider temp range.

Concur and I use the same logic---CVs have a hard life.

I've always had good luck with Redline grease. That's what I've always used on the DMS struts and it works better than the stuff they try to sell you for a million dollars. You need lube just to pay for their lube.

What's the best kind of grease for disk brake hubs and wheel bearings?

I used a generic hi-temp wheel bearing grease on the bearing in my scirocco.

I used Kendall Super Blue for the longest time. The fact that the stuff maintained its consistency over the 10 years I was using the same jug of it speaks volumes about its stability. I had some redline that separated into wax and runny red goo after about a year...

best i have found so far is Bel-Ray "Waterproof Grease"

i've had the grease wash out of the JVAB struts, using normal EP grease, or other stuff.

The Bel-Ray stuff stays put, is cheap and works.

Found at my local Moto-x shop, they use it on all suspension bushings/bearings as it doesn't wash away! Told the guy there was i was using it for, and he mentioned it sounded perfect!

Everytime I see this thread I once again wonder what the magic of KY his and hers is. I see the commercials, but I never really know.

Amusing, first thing that hit me was an interesting variation on the WWJD bumper stickers that all the hip kool-aid drinkers are sporting on their SUVs.

As for the his/hers, perhaps some experimentation is in order, maybe some vinegar/baking soda, peanut-butter/chocolate, tastes great/less filling, errr...

I've sold a bunch of this stuff in the past:

but at $700+ a tube it's probably overkill smiling smiley

Agreed but didn't think to list it as I didn't even know Bel-Ray was around anymore

I sell into the automotive plants, one of my customers was using the Kluber grease on the fan bearings of a large heat treat furnace.

It's not the sort of stuff they hand out samples of smiling smiley, as you might imagine. As I recall the stuff had a barium base and roughly 40% teflon content, No clay like they use to thicken most conventional greases so it still retained a little bit of lubricity once the base oils boil off.

Castrol used to produce a non-clay EP grease (if you've ever pulled apart an old CV full of thick grey sludge and gungy water, it hasn't been contaminated, that's what cheap grease looks like after it fails) with a ton of moly and extra tackifiers in it, it was developed for F1 cars when they started using CV joints back in the late 60s. It was relatively inexpensive and it strikes me as a decent all around formulation for rally or off road applications. One of the lines I rep is a custom oil and grease formulator, I may have them run me off a few cases someday if I can corner the tribologist and take him out for a few beers.

Cheers, Ted
