Motocross grease makes perfect sense. Forks are built just like inverted struts, but people actually service them! Why didn't I think of that?

Thanks, I'll go get some.

^^so I grabbed a thing of this over the weekend and serviced my DMS's.....made a pretty big difference (they were overdue) just driving on the street (much softer and nasty squeek is gone). Easier than I thought, but I didn't attempt to remove/replace the bushings. One of my inserts is dead too.

You could make your own copy of castrol's grease that was developed for F1 cars? Just by giving him a sample of it?

Wouldn't really be a "copy", I would give a shopping list of features to the formulator and he would spec the ingredients based on the requirements -- it takes a bit of time and I'm probably looking at a 5 case (50 tube) minimum.

I would probably start by doing a bit of research to try to find out if the Castrol stuff was still available.

Cheers, Ted

They are still around. If you remember, the beginning of the year you suggested that i get gear oil from them which i have put in the updated gearbox

Hmmn, I thought moly hair treatments were the exclusive purview of drag racers, you learn something new everyday it seems smiling smiley

I tore down the JIC struts today and it seems they've been underlubricated for a while. There is way too much side-to-side play when they're assembled, a bunch of chatter marks on both struts, and a nasty burnished spot on one.

see below:

Does anyone (JVL?) have a source for new bushings (I don't know what you call the bits the strut actually slides on) or recommendations how to to salvage these guys? How much wear is acceptable on that burnished spot (gotta put a micrometer on it this weekend)? Is there any point in trying to resurface them a bit with some steel wool and a lathe?

First check to see if the inserts are are straight. A wear spot like that would indicate it might be bent.

You can buy bushings in various sizes at bearing stores (like MBS). You need +.002/3 interfernece. Old bushings need to be cut out, new bearings pressed in them bored (reamed?) to size of your inserts + clearance... I had a machinest do this, cost a litte over a hundred if I remember correctly for 2 struts.

JVL will correct me if I got any of this wrong, but that's what I remember.

I'm one small step closer to getting this done. Just put the inserts on the dyno and confirmed they are still good (or still as new... Not that good really). Also confirmed that JIC USA isn't capable of any kind of service, just selling new struts...

So, when I get these bushings reamed to size, what kind of clearance do I need?

Just another quick vote for BelRay. It's what I've been using in my Protracs since 2003.

As for CV grease, I bent over for some NEO CV grease once. Just once. Didn't perform much better than the Valvoline synthetic, but oh, how messy.

I now use this stuff that I buy from RCV www.rcvperformance.com that is waaay cheaper than the NEO, but has a coppery color mixed with the typical moly graphite color. Dunno the name of it, but man, it's the best stuff for CVs I've tried. They scoop it into tubs and send it to me, but no name on it.

And I've rebuilt a LOT of CVs in the past few years. smiling smiley

Bel Ray has 18 different greases with about 3 different grades each (or 54 different possibilities) that are "waterproof"

Any specific type / marking etc. on the grease?

Thanks

I just walked into the local motocross shop and bought what they had. They run in the same conditions I do, so I'm hoping they use the right stuff.

Now, how much clearance on my bushings? Where the hell is JVL?

VOLVOS SUCK, they're heavy, overly complicated, you can't get good suspension for them, and no self-respecting rally driver has ever wasted his time in one!

That should bring him out...
