Super Production build?
September 15, 2008 10:15AM
Hey, I know there is some resistance to Sub-a-Rats and overpriced/do-it-all-for-you AWD rally cars on this forum, but here goes:

1-What do you think is going to be the Rally America Super production car of choice?

2-Do you think there is any point in updating a PGT/P4 2002 wrx to run SP. If so, what would you declare it to be or update?

i thought the whole point of SP was so that the evo's and STI's could do the proper brake upgrades to run 15" wheels (along with whatever other details were in the rules that I haven't fully read) but NOT have to compete in open class.

the rules are still on stock turbo/engine, yes? so a 2002 WRX in SP would have to run a stock 2.0L engine w/restricted td-o4 turbo which still couldn't compete with a 2.5L sti (power-wise).

but I could be wrong.

Link to rules:

I think I can update the front end body work and declare my '02 to be a '06 or '07 whatever.

yeah, but you still need to do an engine/turbo/drivetrain upgrade to stay competitive with a 2.5L 06 STI or evo 8,9,10.

that's a lot of extra cash just to 'keep up' imo.

Yeah, fer sure, a lot of cash. Basically need to steal or buy an sti. and i would need different wheels and struts for the later hubs.

I don't think it makes any sense to build a later wrx.

That's why I'm posting, hoping others have figured something out.

apparently the new regular wrxs brakes wont fit under 15s like the older ones did. so if you didn't make a new class every wrx would have to run open just because of the brakes.

i think that's one of the bigger reasons for the new class. but still any sti is going to kick it's ass.

All WRX brakes fit under 15" rally wheels.

i wouldn't be so sure.

as long as someone will keep up with the gearboxes, the 5 spd is still a good deal lighter.

And the 2.5L "wrx" motor will make just as much power when you put a restrictor and tune into it....

but he's talking about an '02wrx with 2.0L. and even if you swap in an LSD in the front, i wouldn't want to race with the 02-03 'glass' tranny.

Jon is right. Ask me how I know. I'm currently on my monthlong search for a 02 tranny that works (for PGT). Fuggin nightmare.

But the Super Production rules specifically allows the older Subies to run the 6 speed trans on the 2.0L motor.

The question I have is could you tune the 2.0L motor to compete with the new 2.5L motors?

I would be interested to see what a built Evo 8 or 9 would do in this class. I heard a rumor that man of the Evo's that run in the NASA series are pretty close to being able fit into the class.

There is no replacement for increased displacement. ;-)

I think Eli is looking for tranny for his PGT (not yet SP) car. Kinda like looking for a straight Priest.
