Oh yeah?

Boost is the replacement for displacement.

Don't go all Intra-netty on me and say the fucking obvious "Well if'n ya upped the boost in a 2.5 then ....."
No 2 motors one a 2.5t and the other a 2,0t at atmpsher, add x more boost and the 2,0 is a bigger motor--in term of what goes thru it every turn of the motor.

A fully-prepped 2.0L motor in PGT can make similar power to a 2.5L as far as I know (and I don't know much!).

I get 230 at the wheels with an STI block and VF30 (bigger turbo) - on pump gas. I think most pretty well prepped PGT 2.0L cars are getting about 200. Subie Gal gets 205 at the wheels, and I don't think she's on the bleeding edge, tune-wise. With a nice block, all forged bits, balanced blueprinted, etc, I'm sure the power can be similar.

Anyone else care to comment? This is an interesting thread. Would be nice to get Dave Clark's weigh in.

In other news on the tranny front, I bought one from a guy and he sent me a completely dissassembled tranny when assuring me it was in excellent ready to go condition. Fun huh!?!?!

BUT - I've got my eye on a nice built PGT tranny - Cusco f+r LSDs, STi center diff, REM treated gears, etc. smiling smiley

right right right, I agree....BUT, i'm going by the first post...building an 02', is it worth it?? so is it worth it to do a +$6K STI tranny swap just to 'keep up'. even if you get a deal on the tranny, you still have to do the axles, hubs, rear diff, etc. for that cash, i'd rally just do a 5mt ppg gearset and have some left over for a front diff.

regarding tuning a 2.0L to the same power level as a 2.5L (Assuming the same turbo).....I dunno, haha...I don't have that much experience with tuning with a restrictor....but turning up the boost or not, the 2.5L has a lot more torque at lower rpms compared to a 2.0L. At the top-end....no, I'd say they'd be the same.

ELI....how much torque were you running at the wheels? keith has ~320ft/tq...which is what I have with a freaking 20g and no restrictor. His car is a montster, but i've seen 2.0L's with the same amount of torque as well. At least on dyno sheets.

oh, and to answer your first question....I think its going to be the STI. Just too many of them out there (compared to the evos) and there's just so many extra parts out there as well.

hell, there isn't even a vendor that sells aluminum skid plates for the EVO, every evo skid plate I've seen has been custom and $$$.

So I toss down a few shots of liquid courage, go down to the mall and drive home with a '05-'07 sti (that i just got a smokin deal on, but needs a drivers window and ignition), and swap the sti powertrain (engine, tranny, drive-shafts, axles, rear-diff, hubs), unique sti body work (nose, big wing, later tailights, rear bumper cover, 34mm restrictor into my old wrx, then I'm good to go, in SP, eh?

Oh yeah, the struts are different, too. And the wheel bolt circles. Damn. might as well buy some $10,000 Ohlins, too. And 30 new gravel wheels (roughly $7,500). Can't find them at the mall. Man, my wife gonna need a better job.

Jon, we are getting between 320 and 330 in torque to the wheels on piss gas - 91 octane. When it was tuned for 100 octane the numbers were a bit higher... smiling smiley

Check this month's issue of Modified (I think that's the name of it?) - Tanner's car is in it. They're saying they get over 500 ft lbs of torque....insane.

My friend just picked up all the stuff needed to convert his 02 wrx to a 6 speed for half of what you estimated. He got the trans, dccd, r180 diff, axles, etc. Which is cheaper and easier than getting a ppg gearset and installing it, probably even cheaper and way better than an RA gearset too.

Hey Eduardo...when you head down to the Mall of NH next time, can you drag along some near-do-well Lyndy-buro pals and bring the wife back an '08 STI? She doesn't like the lack of sack in the saab wagon and is feeling the need for speed.

Gunmetal grey if you can find it.

you can't...its cash, and you give it to the guy on the back of a truck winking smiley

j/k....seriously, $3K is a steal for all that...but that's got to be an exception.

And is it really easier than just having someone upgrade your tranny?

Now he needs to get STI rims (for the sti hubs) right? and what's he going to do for suspension now as well? <--Im asking cuz I really don't know...assuming its a WRX, his current suspension probably won't work with the STI hubs' mounting points.

I just think there's a lot more to it. And for all that work, I'd want 4.44 final drive and proper rally gear ratios (isn't that one of JVL's big points as well?--when the topic comes up, I know I've read him talking about the benefits of proper ratios)

oh, and for the record, unless I got a screaming 'off the truck' deal as well, I wouldn't get PPG gears. Mfactory seems to have a pretty proven gear set and is quite a bit cheaper.

RA gears seem to be a crappy deal as well...unless you pay extra to cryo-treat and shotpeen, they're still very breakable. hell, my tranny has RA width gears....it was Subaru's solution to the 02-03 glass trannys.
