Tim, look at Moto Guzzis. They're shaft drive too, but on the other side of the hub. They may rotate in the right direction for you without any extra gearing.

I think BMW's are the same.

Also, if you're in need of an experienced LeMons driver, I know of one who's out of a ride for this fall's event. *coughcough*

Naw. Just cut trapdoors in the floorboards and use a few feet to get you back a few feet. Flintstone Reverse FTMFW!

We are stuck on Honda power at this point and the quick change gearbox turns out to be an asset because we can easily correct the final drive ratio for the track and final weight of the car. The used gears are so cheap...I've gotten two sets so for for $15 each.

If you've got some time swing by the shop tonight or Wednesday between 6 and 11PM we'll be here working on the car.

So how's the Magna Carta going?

After looking at it, I'm really curious to see if you're going to be able to keep it pointing in one direction.

Tim,

Your car looks great. I'm on the CBR-powered geo metro Lemons Team which won thunderhill last year. I hope t-hill this year goes better than the last race at buttonwillow, where we chewed through two engines!

Hey Chris,

I didn't realize you were still in the area. We still need to go for a MTB ride in Redwood.

Are you guys going to change to a stouter diff in the Gnome? That new engine should really do a number on the old one.

Why not just flip the whole axle upside down and weld new brackets for stuff?

Any update pictures? I know you've been hard at work. smiling smiley

We considered just flipping the the 3rd member but you are forgetting about pinion bearing oiling. The ring and pinion could probably take being run on the coast side without exploding but we couldn't take the risk on the bearings. I actually pulled the fuel pump out of the RX7 shell with the intent of using it for forced bearing lubrication at one point.

Here's the latest as of last Thursday night. He posted it on Saturday morning and there were people freaking out about how I was killing the LeMons spirit/subverting the rules by noon.

Re-splined the axle shafts 3" shorter today. Annoying 26 splines with 13.846degree indexing...

We're getting our tires tomorrow so after I weld on the steering arms we're going to have a roller again. Then we only have a zillion more things to do.

Half the cars in a Lemons race don't have reverse gear anyway.

I really like the use of a quickchange like that. Crap ratios? Who cares? $60 for another gearset and good to go.

It's $60 for a new set. That's a little rich for LeMons money. I bought a used set yesterday of eBay for $5 plus $5 shipping in a flat rate box. These things seem to be a plague on the garages of the Midwest just like 240 Volvos are in Seattle

Last tricky bit on the input shaft tonight. Sadly I don't own a sinker EDM machine so I had to find another way to put in the internal 21 tooth spline. First I dismembered the stock u-joint from the motorcycle and machined the outside profile into an 8 lobe pattern like this:

Then I put a matching female version of that pattern into the input shaft.

Set them up with a 0.001" interference fit.

And presto a factory spline.
