The mind boggles at machining a complex shape like that with a deliberate interference fit.

You guys are SO going to be penalized smiling smiley This project is just too freakin' cool. The GRM Berzerkely's got nothing on this.

Man. Nice way to make that spline there. No way I could do something like that.

I may have to give you a call and see if you can help me with a few bespoke parts for my Z600 BEC.

I still think having an entire machine shop (with an experienced machinist) is cheating somehow.

BTW, can you make gearsets for a Golf? smiling smiley

Not cheating according to the rules...

I don't have a hobbing machine to make gears. Besides, you can just buy those for way less than I could make them.

That's about the same as I think - though what's going on in that shop, is way too cool for me to get hung up on petty stuff like "spirit of the rules" :-).

I think the rules are flawed to begin with. But I think this is totally within the spirit of the rules, which is to do the most with what you have for as little dollars as possible. It's just convenient that Tim happens to be a racer who also owns a machine shop.

It's a roller again...it would even stop if one of my teammates had not over-torqued the banjo bolt in the end of a brand new master cylinder. Yay, extra work for me...now I get to disassemble the thing and machine it for a threaded insert

We're all about the fit and finish on this fine automobile. If you want to donate some green paint I'll shoot the car and put a sponsor logo across the hood for you

ok, for everyone complaining about how this isn't in the spirit of the rules, please go Lemons or chumpcar racing before you get all arm chair about it.

first of all, both lemons and chump car organizers want to encourage insane engineering. our MR2 has no creative engineering on it and after the Portland event, not only did we miss out on bonus laps, but our car just wasnt that cool. now we have some crazy ideas for wacky engineering that might make the car a little faster, and definitely more nuts.

there is no way this honda is going to go out there and kick the shit out of all the other cars. people bring miatas. the crap can maitas at PIR were within 3 seconds of the lap time of real spec miatas (the chicane was removed on day two, so you can make this comparison). people also bring ringer drivers. we had one on our team, he was like 5 seconds a lap faster than everyone else on our team and probably would of had fast lap of the weekend if the gearbox didn't break. so basically it takes a lot more than a car like this to win. you need to have your pits stops hella dialed, (our first stops took 8 minutes to fuel the car), have fast drivers and a really fast car.

my last point is that like other racing, it takes a lot of money to go crap can racing. guys show up at these events with quarter million dollar tow rigs (from their real race cars), and serious pit equpment. just becuase you are racing a $500 car, if you want to win, you can't help but spend a lot on the campaign. our team must have like 6k into our crap can campaign by now after two races.

crap can racing is so much fun though. 24 hour racing is totally insane, and the rules basically allow you to do anything, which makes the series so fun. for instance, we want to put a wing on our mr2. what are the wing rules? just don't makes it cost too much. what other kind of racing series can you have that much fun with?

Still lots of loose ends and about 100lb of missing parts but we got it on the scales late yesterday.

There might be something to this mid-engine weight distribution thing...it could catch on

That's the genius of the formula. It's basically knife fight rules within a price limit and grip limit based on the tire tread-wear limit of 190+. Under that limit you can throw as much labor, skill, engineering and clever as your team can muster.
