It's not that hard if you're serious about rallying. |

Okay, so you skip Olympus and Oregon Trail for one year. No big deal. Likely the budget won't exist to do every event every year and it'll only take a couple NASA events to have enough coefficients to surpass the novice license in RA.
A Supra would be too long. ![]() Don't know shit about Supras. Are you just set on Toyota? If so, build a Corolla or old Celica. Much easier. Or hunt down who bought that Starlet that was partially prepped in Portland about a year ago and get it back from them. Grant Hughes |

Well do what everybody else does when there's a pesky Rally America rule: write and call and whine and lie and sing a good song why it shouldn't apply to you. > > > Anway, now that you guys won me over with > wheelbase I am thinking...wait for it....how about > a MKII Supra? 103" wheelbase, Got one? Got extra fender flares? Whaddya gonna do if'n you don't like the stock steering? OK a quickener. Maybe the box has a loose bellhousing---jest in case you want alternate gearbox. big motor with big > power upgrades, Not the inline 6!!!!! Look even the Factory cars when we saw them at Olympus WRC in 1987 with Waldegård and Torph looked and drove LIKE PIGS, and that was in huge part because of the LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG ass inlne 6 hanging way out in front. Some years later when Kosmides was out as the sole competitior in National Gp5, the CAR WAS A PIG and if he ever actually "attacked" in corner, the the rear end would swing around wildly back and forth. Granted his was a MkIV and weighd about 3700lbs but the long snout and heavy weight didn't help him out. He barely won Gp5 even as the only competitor. >2700 lbs factory (about the same > as a Sube), I think you'll find the typical Subie over 3100 lbs. >could get it down to 2447 min weight, > good weight dist...yeah, i know, why not just get > a Volvo...everyone should just rally Volvos.... Not absolutely 100%. I like Xratties and have parts, extra shells, extra doors, racks hubs crossmembers, swing arms hatches etc. Now if you DON'T have extra stuff for the MkII, especially if you're talking the "Celica Supra" with the flares and the IRS, and have extra rear trailing arms and hubs and junk-n-stuff then run out to the Pick-n-Pulls in the Portland area and see if they are being nice and storing some for your future use. And while you're checking out the maybe one early 80s Celica, count and see if they have at least a dozen Volvos.. Then you see why I sorta push Volvos: they store your parts for you. It's the searching for obscure spares deal. The Japanese don't care about 20 year old cars "So Solly Round Eye!!!" so if you think about ANY Japanese car more than maybe 7 years YOU better assume the p[arts might be a BITCH to find and may be NLA. Other than that, or if like Dave Clark, the Younger in Yakima, if you have one then just choose a good 4 cylinder and have fun. > > > > > Edited 1 times. Last edit at Nov 2, 2008 by > DirkaDirkaJack. The funny thing is the reason I like the Starlet is because I love watching all the Finnish guys racing them. Then if you think about it a little bit, the reason they have been such a dominate 2WD car in Finland is because they are/were plentiful and thus got built often and knowledge of what needed done became readily available. Same exact reason why there are so many Golf rally cars in the US and why it's the intelligent choice in FWD cars and why the hands down smartest RWD rally car to build is a Volvo 240.
When I started my car, I couldn't find a decent, running 240, but could find a Merkur so I went with that. I'll some day have a 240 rally car as well. If I had $5K I'd buy Houston's up in Calgary in a heartbeat. Grant Hughes |

I've got a little starlet here I picked up about a year ago, and I've always wanted to rally it. But spares are hard to find and they actually are quite expensive for an econoshitbox due to the rarity factor. They're pretty much the only rwd hatchback in N.A. weight = 1500lbs! The thing rotates even crazy sicker than my GTX.
If I were to build a g5 car it would be volvo 240 for sure. With the extended strut towers and sooperbitchin suspenders and the 4 link in the back and all Johns goodies plus 2 million of them in the junkyards even here. I see 4 a week come through the one little junkyard we have here and some times they're SUPER clean shells. Like what is that thing doin in here???? I used to have a ae 86 corolla and it was probably the best handling car I ever drove in stock shitbox form. Parts for these things are stupid expensive. retarded expensive because of all the drifter dudes and the JDM crap. The best corolla video ever. It makes me crack up laughing everytime I watch it. You missed one Adam! Michael LeCompte |

Talk to some local drifters,
I'm sure that there is a 240sx or corolla shell sitting around. corollas are rare in junk yards because enthusiasts have started "hording" them, just like the VW-horetex rabbit guys. call it the distributed junk yard. you can get anything you want for reasonable prices (because they don't want what you need), if you know who to ask. (he's called Craig, he has some sort of list) the drifters like the "clean" cars, but you dont need that one, pick the one that has the messed up fender or the "wrong" wheels on it. start with an sr5 and go straight to megasquirt engine swap. the toyota has been unstoppable. Just like the volvo, pick something "cheap" and available. pick something familiar too. I drove a corolla as a street car for years. you've been driving your legacy to the slopes and stuff - so you should convert an old impreza to RWD, and call it good. power and weight aren't as important as finishing events. if you want to try something unique and possibly cheap (because it's a classic FR layout) do a toyota truck that looks like this - 1995? tacoma? someone else can do more research - WB 121in for extended - 103in for regular short box ![]() ![]() you'll get reliability - toughness - suspension travel - interior room - simplicity everything you'd ever want. who says you can't put rack and pinion steering in a truck? I built Ralph's first Supra (the NA one, not the second turbo one) and it was "only" 3100 lbs, not 3700. The turbo I reckon was a little bit more but not 3700. For as big and heavy as it was it was actually a pretty good handling car and quite well behaved but it still sucked compared to his bitchin' Mk2 Escort. There are still tons of better choices than a Supra. > >2700 lbs factory (about the same > > as a Sube), > > I think you'll find the typical Subie over 3100 > lbs. > This is true but it is possible, though it takes some work, to get a GC8 chassis down to 2700 lbs in rally trim. |

To mean, the fun thing about driving is dancing a car on the edge of control, not overall speed. I am not the fastest driver, but I can drive. alan |

ok, I was already to let this thread die because of wheelbase bla, bla, bla.....
...but then it occurred to me that Cody Crane who kicks some G2 ass has a CRX--with a 90.3 inch wheel base.... ...so...stick that in your pipe and smoke it. We are working on the Lemons MR2 though and taking a look at the underside of the car, the suspension links look like they would last about 10 minutes of stage rally. If I was going to prep an MR2 for G2 (don't worry, I'm not going to) I would throw those factory links away and start over with some fab'ed stuff. |

Seriously, do you think the results of one amateur rallying in a field of 3-4 other complete amateurs actually means anything? Seriously? The phrase "in spite of" is what springs to mind. > > We are working on the Lemons MR2 though and taking > a look at the underside of the car, the suspension > links look like they would last about 10 minutes > of stage rally.
