Hi George I'm still would like the '79 just got busy the last few months with my Grandfather being sick and the huge hole in the roof. Last time we planned on me picking it up I had just got the trailer from my cousin when I got your message. Also got a fancy 531 head for christmas.

John,

Thanks for answering what many might construe as dumb newbie questions. I'm gonna pick your brain here again. In looking at Volvo 240's, is there anything specific that I should be looking for? Specific years to stay away from? A car that would be a rare find that I should sell my soul for? I have time to do it right, I don't have time to do it twice.

Why would anybody want to rally a piece of shit mommymobile. I'd be embarrased being seen in a Volvo. Its like riding a moped or a fat chick.

Since you asked, I enjoy quirky. That's why I bought a Subbie for a daily driver. It's an Impreza Outback Sport. I like wagons! Dad bought a Volvo 544 from a guy in Mt Hood OR when I was a teenager. Drove it home to Kansas City also. Traded that for a 246dl wagon. That's probably where my disposition for quirky wagons comes from.

Coming from someone who is planning to rally a BMW. smiling smiley
When I see someone in a BMW, I think to myself: He's a fucking douchebag jock MBA who thinks he knows what the fuck he's talking about, about everything and anything and spends his weekends playing pool at the 'cool' bars in the 'hip' parts of town slipping Rohypnol into any girls drink who gets within five feet of him. He is probably named Chad and wears his collar popped up because it makes him think he looks sensitive, even though he's really just another dumb fucking jock. He calls all of his friends Bro as well as just about anyone else he ever meets.

Unless the person driving is Asian. Then they are engineers who stay up until 4 or 5 am every night plaing Ninja Gaiden on their PS3.

Or if the person driving is female, she's a gold digger and her husband is a fucking lawyer and their both douchebags and like to drink Chardonnay.

Anyone who has an H2 or H3 is obviously a fuckward retard.
Yeah, I just paid 60K for this piece of shit truck that has absolutely no quality control and can't be taken anywhere outside of the suburbs.
I almost got into a fist fight during a snow storm with some fucking So Cal transplant, fucking tattoo'd up snowboarder bro last winter outside of new loft complex. I had gotten my car stuck in an alley and this guy was pulling me out with the winch on his Jeep and the Hummer fag pulled up and was being an ass about how we were blocking the road. With his dip shit blonde fake breast bimbo sitting in the front seat. Anyhow,...

I don't think a decent human being has ever purchased an H2.. H3s are for wannabe douche bags.

Essentially you are looking for a rust free 240 sedan without a sun roof. Preferably standard, but it's pretty damn simple to make an auto standard. The engines are quite literally free and nothing else of concern changed (some minor styling).

A good running turbo charged example would be great.. but whatever smiling smiley

There's really nothing rare about a volvo 240 other than the 1975 (straight up and down pushrod 2 litre motor). There's talk about grp A cars.. but they're just like any other. A 242 GT fetches little to no premium over any other 242 and is mostly styling and badging anyways.

That's of course my opinion.. some may argue with it. I had the opportunity to buy some NOS 142 GT badging for one of my 140s.. but almost no one here knows or cares what a 142, 144, 145 is let alone that it's a GT..

Edit: I should add that some things are obviously more desirable. The best 8 Valve head is generally agreed to be the 531.. but didn't come on any volvo car over here. The 16 Valve head never came in a 240. Some say the b21 block is the best of the "red blocks", but that's arguable I'm sure. It's pretty easy to turbo charge any red block for little money. And if you choose to go wild you won't be using many Volvo internals (too heavy).

I don't see why a wagon wouldn't be as good as a sedan either.. A lot of the shell rigidity would come from the cage and seam welding in either the sedan or the wagon... the wagon would have better aerodynamics, be easier to strip, easier to build a roll cage in, easier to store things in... oh sorry forgot about RAs stupid rules... sorry I'm a Canadian and don't need a super duper ultra bulkhead... a wagon would be fine or better for me!

Essentially the same shell from '75 to '93.
-2 doors are the same size as 4 doors.
-4 doors will have better access to the rear once you install a cage
-4 door doors are more common (interchangeable with wagon)
-early "flathoods" are getting hard to find (therefore more expensive to replace)
-later style trunk lid has unlockable pushbutton latch, early style always needs key

Kevin put it more concisely than I did.. I would only add that 2 doors are more expensive than 4 doors (just like any other car)

Ok,

George has the car, a 244DL. I'll be acquiring it shortly. I've been searching and researching past posts here and in the construction forum on SS. I've seen some pics of some tasty bright green suspension pieces. Particularly those lower control arms. Just a guess, but it seems those are a weak point, hence the upgraded ones? The Dana 30 LSD looks very promising, but I'll with a welded diff for now. From what I've read, the N/A motor does not produce enough torque to break a T5. Eventually something along the lines of Grant's dogbox from G-Force is where I am headed. Brakes, I see John does some really awesome binders. Anything else I oughta be thinking about?
