In my very limited experience, steel machines nicer then cast iron... but I've only done each one once. So, super limited.

but I'm not sure if he's planning on machining anything.

What does forged iron machine like?

Coming as it did just like that it saeemed to indicate the CHANCE that the flywheel was steel since that's what the subject was.

Yeah, of course.
Iron can and does shatter without warning.
I've broken an iron crank without warning, and friends broke an iron Saab flywheel and afterwards said "It was way cheaper to roll the car than to do that"
Looking to avoid nasty surprises.
Like both feet flopping around in the footwell like carp on the pier after they've been neatly sawed off.

making flywheels in oneseys or threesies aint toooo bad, maybe $20 in material and some lather and mill time.
Not too worried about weight, just my friends footsies.

6 speeds trannys i found for 800 bucks all day and 350 for steel crank shafts hmmm
I'm becoming more ears for this project. rods and pistons. I'm excited now
because of the injectors in the head that means i can make any kind of intake
runners i want i just don't like the water coming out of the back of the motor in
my front wheeler.

on ebay there is also cast exhaust turbo manifolds for 125 hmm looks good so far

another note mazda speed 6 2.3 crank is not the same and will not fit in a mazda
3 or cx7 motor the jurnals are smaller who would guess owell

Yea, but your message showed up AFTER I said it was, indeed, iron. I suspect we were sending messages at the same time or something. no worries, all clear now.

Understood. I've machined down Mitsubishi flywheels and found huge voids in them before. Scary stuff.

Still, the MX-5 factory rev limiter is 7500 rpm, so I'd be confident up to that point, at least.
You've got a machine shop, though, so I'm certainly not going to try to talk you out of making something more bitchiner.

Where are you getting this info? I show the same part number for Mazdaspeed6, Mazdaspeed3 and CX-7.

The non-turbo 2.3 has a 52mm main bearing and a 50mm rod bearing.
The DISI Turbo 2.3 has a 52mm main bearing and a 52mm rod bearing.

Cranks fit in either block, rods are unique both because of bearing diameter and because the turbo rods are forged steel (compared to sintered iron) and have full floating wrist pins (compared to pressed-in).

Still looking for this info on the 2.5...

No John, I just actually put a value on my time. Do you really think that on a 1 or 2 piece run you can design, machine, transfer over a ring rear, surface grind, and balance a flywheel for less than ~$300 each?

Hmmm, that makes me curious about the new forged 2.0 crank. Wonder if it has larger rod journals...

FYI, while we're talking about overpriced flywheels:


Fidanza. They have Mazda3 and MX-5 applications. different part numbers and price (probably different drilling for the pressure plate). If you search long enough, there might be a cheaper application that also fits (2.3L Focus?)

I don't want my word to be law but i talked to a wrecker that is in to 2.3s and he
told me he knows for a fact that mazda 6speed steel crank dose not fit, he said he
tried to put one in a 2.3. So if the part number is the same that should correct
me just a heads up if it was true.

Maybe it didn't fit because he tried to use the standard rods...

And, shit, it's MAZDASPEED6, not Mazda 6Speed. Why does everybody do that? Same shit when I was at Sport Compact Car (not SPORTS compact car, dammit!)

ya the turbo thing haha but is there any markings to tell if it is a steel crank
found a supposedly steel crank for 75 bucks but i need to make sure i don't need a
paper weight

I'm not aware of any markings, but the larger rod journals should be a dead giveaway. measure those babies.
