Wow thats an impressive build. This isn't you is it?

Did you integrate the factory lexus wiring harness and ecu or go standalone?

Where'd you get that fancy-pants bellhousing? Most guys are doin automatic bellhousings with adapter plates on the gearbox.

That would make for a super fun and reliable car to beat the snot out of.

So, JVL, now that you got your answer, what are you gonna do with it?

I think I mentioned something a year or two ago, when I was working on the Mazda3 (RIP), about building a parts bin engine that I couldn't yet talk about (this was before the 2.5 was announced).

Well, you've probably figured out what my partsbin engine is now...

2.5 block and head, DISI 2.3 crank & rods. Some kinda race pistons. MX-5 intake manifold with match-ported manifold spacer. (It's a plastic manifold, but there's a ~2-inch aluminum spacer between the head and manifold.)

Turns out, from the info I can dig up, the 2.5 ports are same as the 2.3 around the valve. Up at the flange, the top of the port has been raised a few mm, roughly an inch on either side of the flange. Basically, they did what would probably have been allowed under the "match porting" rules most restrictive sanctioning bodies have.

If you can't find a 2.5 head, it would be easy enough to do this yourself and use a cheap junkyard head.

As I have probably warned before, check the oil passages between the head, block, and front cover VERY CAREFULLY. There are two different schemes to supply oil to the VTC actuator, and I can't figure out which engines use which scheme. One goes straight from the block to the head, the other goes from the block to the front cover and into the head from there.

Also, there are two different size front pulleys, which have corresponsing front covers with different placement of the crank angle sensor mounts. The different size pulleys also have different tooth patterns.

Lots of variables to weigh...

Some RWD Duratec info (they're using the fairly light factory Fiesta ST flywheel):

and a source for pricey bellhousings:

Sorry for the sidetrack, but you may be able to see why (if I do this link right).

I just found out that engine was available in a production bike. Anybody got 50 large for a worthwhile investment?

(I know, I know, NOT RALLY. But a Very cool Engine.)

Yeah, I knew they made them for racing, but just found out they sold a production bike with that style engine. Less than 300 made, they cost $50,000 when they came out (in 1992!).

Sounds like they had to make a production run of 300 bikes for homologation purposes.

So back to Duratec talk. I have a duratec focus motor that will be going in my rally car this winter.

Any thoughts on the Cosworth intake manifold that is offered for the 2.3L motor. I know that Lurch is running this unit on his motor.

What about the Ford ranger crank? It is very cheap, ~$150 and since it is has not balance shaft gears on it is significantly lighter than the stock crank found the ford motors.

Are the DISI cranks compatible with the Ford blocks and heads?

Tony,

Andris answered the deck height question a while back. Same as the 2.3 was the answer.

Andrew,

I don't know of any reason the cranks would not interchange. Except, of course, the larger rod journals on the forged crank. Get rods at the same time...

Bandwidth is tight down here in NZ, so rally pictures will have to wait for next week.

Hey guys..sorry to dig up this old thread.

But..I'm down to one 2.3 duratec now..wifey's Mazda3 went away last month.

And yesterday when starting my remaining 2.3 in the Focus, instead of starting I got a dreaded clatter and the sound of an engine with no compression.

Of course, I'll have to properly diagnose what actually happened-quick solution was to hop into the Astrovan.

But I have upgrade visions and they involve complete 2.5 longblocks (with a vct delete kit installed of course), or if the budget allows maybe 2.3 Disi steel crank destroked 2.5 duratec..if it's actually doable.

What ever happened with this engine project?

Could be different cars. But I thought the car was sold to or run by the all wheels driven guys who blew it up at Oregon Trail in 2010.
