Is it just the bearing sizes you need to know for the 2.5? What else? I read the thread, but it's not clear exactly what info you dudes need. Let me know and I will find out and report back.

The stock 2.5 crank, from what I know, is good to go as-is. The 2.3s in the WC touring cars have an aftermarket crank.

The lack of keyways is a non-issue. The parts go on and off with minimal effort and with good reliability. It's dead simple to set up, and like Dave said, way easier than trying to figure out if you've got it right the 'other' way.

If you want to run a small clutch instead of OEM, Comptech has a flywheel for a 5.5" as well as some other parts (like whole high HP engines).

Hey, Andris,

I guess I should have asked you first instead of poking around all my powertrain "experts" who don't ever touch engines...

Any idea if that 2.5 crank is actually stronger, or is the smaller budget forcing you guys to figure out the stock cranks were fine all along?

What???? I've had a subscription for the last 2 years...it's fantastic. All of the engine articles are that in depth or more. Usually the only thing they hold back is really obscure stuff like how much barrel shape they machine into the piston or things of that nature.

There's a minor amount of redundancy between them and Racecar Engineering from month to month though. Seems like the same writers are pitching articles to both publications with only minor changes.

Comptech has drawings for a 7.25" flywheel for use with a Tilton twin plate rally clutch, too. They made mine.

They did my shortblock, and when things went haywire, they redid my head and tuned the beast, too.

I cannot say enough good about Comptech. I understand Doug doesn't own it anymore, but I believe they are as good as ever.

Any word on 2.5 deck height? I spoke to Ricardo Vega at F2 and he has a 2.5 block but last I heard he had not measured deck height. I have not spoken to him since either. His contact info is:

Ok,

The 2.5 has 52mm mains and rods like the DISI motor. The stock crank is "better" than the 2.3's and is going to be tried out in the new TC engine. If someone needs an aftermarket crank, a company called Circle Racing on the east coast apparently has had them made.

The stock 2.5 rods are beefy and forged, whereas the 2.3 stock rods are powdered metal and thin. Upgraded bolts should be sufficient.

Deck height - the 2.0,l is shorter (probably ~12mm ?) and the 2.3 and 2.5 are the same.

The 2.3 DISI crank is forged and very nice. We probably could have used this in the touring cars, but it was not available when the 2.3l engine was developed.

I'll echo Eric's praise for Comptech; Tony Manzer (long-time head of the engine shop, despite the split and sale of the company) has been the most humble and professional person to deal with. Engines show up on-time, and without fault or failure. If you are thinking of building an MZR, there is nobody I would trust more.

Hey Andris I stumbled upon a post of yours about an austrialian kit to put the 1uz engine in the miata.

I have a SC 400 and done a few swaps with that motor, so pretty familiar with it.

Are you going in that direction with a miata?

Here's the gallery from when I was building it a few years ago. There are a bunch of pics of some BS I did to install it with the automatic trans (for about a week to get it refereed in CA) that can be ignored. The final configuration is a Supra/SC300 W58 gearbox and a Turbo-II RX-7 diff/axles (towards the bottom). It doesn't look like there is a final cleaned up engine bay pic in there, so I'll have to dig one up.

http://picasaweb.google.com/alaivins/Miata

There isn't a kit to install it, I'd just seen pics of the first one done (in Aus.) and knew it was physically possible. Everything was figured out along the way. The most powerful and straightforward swap now is the LSX engines, which you can get a kit for and fit nicely. It was an option when I did mine, but I was intrigued by the Toyota engine.

Oh, and it's not a rally car, just a fun street toy. If it's something you want to read more about, search "andris" on miata.net in the engine conversions forum.
