The SCCA Solo rules just came out. They accept the BSI standards. Of course they also allow the SNELL M- standards. But they are a group that does not march lockstep with the FIA.

World drops BS, SCCA picks it up.

Of course, if SCCA didn't have their heads up their asses they wouldn't have dropped BS when RallyAmerica took over stage rally.

all i have to say about the SCCA and "rules" is Autocross. Geh. I dont even think JVL understands that language.

I am sorry, but what is RA supposed to do? Continue to allow safety gear that has never been accepted by most sanctioning bodies in the US past the point when it is accepted by the FIA?

The SCCA Solo rules just came out. They accept the BSI standards. Of course they also allow the SNELL M- standards. But they are a group that does not march lockstep with the FIA.

You know that comparing Solo and stage rally helmet requirements is an apples and oranges comparison. The guys that I do lapping days with also accept BSI and Snell M, but the protection needed for stage rally is a bit higher.

What other groups in the US where the minimum requirement is Snell SA has ever accepted BSI? NRS? Who else? I don't know of any and am interested in knowing if there are any.

RA does not march lockstep with the FIA. For example, the FIA is accepting SA2000 helmets a bit longer than RA (and most other US groups that do the rolling 10-year thing with Snell SA) is. If other, comparable US groups accepted BSI red label and continued to accept it past the FIA date, I think there may have been an opportunity to argue that RA should go with a later date, but that isn't what happened.

Boy, do I wish that such a waiver existed and not just for rally. Sadly, there are some rights that you can't sign away, no matter how aware you are of what you are doing.

I think we all hate to see someone not get their intended value from an item, but we should all recognize that pretty much nothing lasts forever. Whether it is trailer tires or bread on a shelf, all things pass their usefullness. It is particularly hard to discern when safety items will no longer function as intended. Considering the consequences one has to err on the side of caution. I'm not sure why anyone would allow a BSI helmet to start with. That standard came out in 1985, there are helmets made in 85/86 that have no way to validate their age. I can tell you that fiberglass does not last forever. It dries out, gets brittle, cracks, absorbs water and a host of other ills. I'm sure the foam padding and cloth lineing has something that will deteriorate with time. Personally I'm glad to see them go because of that lack of dating. Considering the wierd standard I'd hesitate to blame RA,FIA or any other body for finally rejecting it.

If the FIA no longer recognizes the standard then I can't see where RA can reasonably accept it, or NRS but who knows on that...

So since a good portion of the rally cars here in the states have Peltor intercoms what helmets are available that are on the FIA list and are compatible with the Peltor? Does anyone know or will I have to go out and buy a new intercom when I get a new helmet?

too bad the Stilo trophy is listed as SA2005 (per Stilo USA website). Its more up my alley but since the DES is SA2010 and only 150 more, im seriously considering having a "fancy" helmet. But my wife endorses that idea. apparently i only have one brain or something...

From what I understand the trophy won't work with the peltor but the wrc and des models will with adapters.

Doesn't RA accept SA standard helmets? FIA as well? If so, why couldn't you use an SA 2010 Peltor?

In retrospect (which is always 20/20, right), I should have bought the WRC Stilo for $950 rather than the Peltor G78 for $650, which will need to be followed up with a SA2010 G79 for $750 in 2013. Peltor is in the buisiness of electronic communication systems, not building helmets. They don't even have helmets on their northamerican website. I guess they sub out the building of these to someone else and we are to beleive and trust the science behind the helmets?

Live and learn, I have made more expensive mistakes in my life.

summit racing has the bell above, just with no electronics, pre drilled for hans still etc for 230 dollars. so if you have an old peltor, you can swap your electronics into just the shell. Since the UK sites lists it w/ intercom for 230 british pounds (about 360 us dollars)

Summit is a great vendor btw, I've used them whenever I can for over 25 years with no complaints.
