Summit is a great vendor btw, I've used them whenever I can for over 25 years with no complaints.

I agree with that for sure. I dont live to far away from them, so everything I order is next day delivery with like $6 shipping. I've spent lots of money with them, more so for my street car build than rally build, but no complaints at all. They'll return stuff like 5 months late, atleast they have with me.

Peltor is in the buisiness of electronic communication systems, not building helmets. They don't even have helmets on their northamerican website.
Maybe because the market for rally helmets is small enough in North America there isn't much value in putting it on the website? Judging a company by what they offer on their North American sight is more than a bit short sighted.

I guess they sub out the building of these to someone else and we are to beleive and trust the science behind the helmets?
If you only bought from the manufacturer of origin you'd be limiting yourself to very few products. Most companies sub out part, or all, of what they market - it isn't like this is something unusual.

Don't forget - a helmet could be a single use purchase ... it has been for me.

summit racing has the bell above, just with no electronics, pre drilled for hans still etc for 230 dollars. so if you have an old peltor, you can swap your electronics into just the shell. Since the UK sites lists it w/ intercom for 230 british pounds (about 360 us dollars)

If you are talking about the cheaper one, you will note that it comes without earcups which are pretty critical in how well a peltor type helmet works. You will need to be able to have space to fit the peltor cups.

the MR which has the cups is $811 USD, so i might as well just buy a peltor in the first place.

I disagree Wilson.
I think it's the intercom that really makes Peltor stand out. I actually don't like how I can't hear people when I have my Sparco Pro Rally Plus Peltor equipped helmet on. Nor does my companion in the car when I yell out the window and blow up our eardrums.

I can hear the folks outside come through the mike in my peltor. That or I put a finger into the earcup.

I like the quiet on the stages with the earcups though - makes communications much easier.

Peltor has always been in the personal protection equipmrnt business:
Main office is in Sollentuna, just down the road from where I used to work at Sollentuna Svets och Smide, almost around the corner from Öhlins Mekaniska Verkstad who make the great Ohlins shocks.

they use the British Standard BS 6658-85 type A/FR which is FIA legal until the end of 2013. There have been no announcements to go beyond that.

From RA bulletin #1

4. British Standards: BS 6658-85 type A/FR, including all
amendments (disallowed after 12/31/2013)

what about FIA 8858-2002?? I assume those have another.....7 yrs on them?

although people seem to use this to describe helmets, as far as I can tell it's a FIA spec for Head and Neck restraints.

no, its for helmets, or at least I found it on this guy:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Suomy-Jet-helmet-auto-racing-HANS-Peltor-Intercom-/280774147020?pt=Apparel_Merchandise&vxp=mtr&hash=item415f717bcc

only $600 compared to the $750+ the new peltors are going for.

Still hans

http://argent.fia.com/web/fia-public.nsf/9BD6FEA5A7446CECC125731500412ACF/$FILE/3_FIA_Stand_8858_2002_Hans.pdf

Looks like there's a blurb in there around 4.12 and 4.14 about attachment points for helmets, guessing that's what get the helmet the sticker.

Just wait till we have to have 8860 helmets....

CARS just passed a rule change to recognise the BSI standard for 10 years after the date of manufacture of the helmet. If there is no date of manufacture indicated on the helmet, the expiry is 12/31/13.
