TOYOTA MOTORSPORT GmbH ANNOUNCES TMG GT86 CS-R3 RALLY CAR

Cologne, Germany - TOYOTA Motorsport GmbH (TMG) is proud to announce it will develop a GT86 R3 rally car as part of its customer motorsport programme.

The rear-wheel drive sports car will be converted to R3 specification and made available to private competitors, with delivery expected for the 2015 season.

The car, which will be known as the TMG GT86 CS-R3, will be built according to R3 regulations, meaning it will have a six-speed sequential gearbox, limited slip differential, modified engine, adapted brakes and other upgrades.

Drawing on the experience of developing the TMG GT86 CS-V3 race car for the Nürburgring-based VLN series, TMG engineers will modify the base car to the maximum level permitted within the regulations.

The TMG GT86 CS-R3 is targeted at private customers and is eligible for all FIA-sanctioned rallies, up to and including the World Rally Championship. Full specifications and pricing will be announced in the coming months.

Today's announcement strengthens TMG's commitment to customer motorsport and rallying, both of which represent key aspects of its long-term business strategy.

With a Yaris R1A already launched plus the ongoing development of a Global Race Engine, TMG is expanding and strengthening its knowledge of rallying and drawing on its proud history in the sport.

TMG's very existence is founded on rally, having begun life in Cologne in 1979 as Toyota Team Europe (TTE). Under Ove Andersson, the company went on to win four drivers' and three manufacturers' World Championships.

Nico Ehlert, Principal Engineer Customer Motorsport: "Rallying is in our blood at TMG so it is very exciting to announce that we will be expanding our rally operations. The GT86 CS-R3 promises to be a thrilling car on the rally stages; with rear-wheel drive we can expect some dramatic action which is sure to be entertaining for drivers and fans alike. Through our experience with the TMG GT86 Cup and the TMG GT86 CS-V3 race car we have built a solid infrastructure for customer motorsport over the past few years. We will draw on this to deliver a reliable, safe and high-performance car, plus all the required technical support, for our customers. We expect demand to be high so we are looking forward to seeing a lot of GT86 CS-R3 rally cars in action from the beginning of the 2015 season."

Racing by TMG:
The customer racing arm of TOYOTA Motorsport GmbH (TMG) is identified by the "racing by TMG" logo, which encompasses race and rally projects designed exclusively for private participants. TMG returned to the world of customer motorsport in 2012 with the launch of the Yaris R1 entry-level rally car, while the same year saw the introduction of the TMG Customer Sport V3 (CS-V3) race car. That car won its class in the Nürburgring 24 Hours and forms the basis of the expanding TMG GT86 Cup, run within the Nürburgring-based VLN series.

About TOYOTA Motorsport GmbH:

still a little too much push

I watched that happen. My god-son was taking pics, so I asked if he got it and he looks and "uh, no" he stopped clicking when they went off. KIDS!

Anywoo, was pretty crazy not being able to see the car at all and having no clue how far down it had gone. Of course, the batteries in my radio had just died (had been hearing radio chatter just a few minutes before). But, they were close enough to the ham, and were out of their car and waving the OK sign pretty quickly. Those were some thick ass bushes!

There is one rallying here in NZ. Not sure what they have done to it, but they finished a recent rally in 18th place (out of 70 entered cars and 42 finishers):

http://www.chrissport.co.nz/results/2014/wairarapa/ss9.htm

We have a circuit race series for them and a couple have been doing endurance racing as well. So quite popular here.

Not sure I see the value for money compared to anything else that is RWD that gets used here, as almost every other car is cheaper. However as the only new RWD car that is rallied in NZ, I guess if you need to run a new car they are a good option?

The other RWD options I've been considering -
* E36 or E30 BMW
* 240SX

Those would both be cheaper to buy and probably somewhat cheaper to get used parts for. Having to replace half the car as "maintenance" would suck though. I've already went through that with my relatively new 2000 Subaru rally car. Basically every bushing, bearing, caliper, steering rack, pump, alternator...etc. Tons of aftermarket for both options, and both have been rallied a lot before.

There seem to be a ton of aftermarket support for BRZ/FRS already, and I expect it to grow - so tons of parts. People also seem to wreck them a lot, so now only could buy a mildly wrecked one for under 10k, but it also means that the used parts market will be plentiful. Some suspension things are interchange-able with the WRX, which also makes things easier. I'm not sure if these are actual advantages, but they're reasons I'm trying to use to justify this adventure... I mostly just like the way it looks tongue sticking out smiley

Really? You must have shit luck since you've replaced more on that 2000 Subaru than any Subaru I've ever heard of. Or did you just replace everything with a preventative mindset?

E36 BMW have a few must have items to replace. There is a whole thread on it. It's not very expensive. You could build a very high spec BMW for the purchase price of a BRZ/FRS.

Well, a disclaimer is that my 2000 Subaru had 200+k miles on it. The alternator didn't fail, but it was making a bunch of noise, so that was kind of preventative. The bushings are probably soft to begin with, and age didn't help. The front trailing arm ones had the consistency of a gummy bear when I replaced them. The bearings are a known problem on these cars, so those will fail until replaced with the newer roller version. Calipers - seizing, because of rust... Oh rust... that's a whole other reason of wanting to get into a newer car, or at least something from outside of the snow-belt.

But we digress...

I agree, a very fast E36 BMW rally car could be had when compared to a 25k stock FRS. I'm thinkin' of a sub-10k pre-crashed one though. The BMW would still be cheaper, but not by a horrible amount, right?

Well, even with all the aftermarket support, there hasn't been really any support for rallying this car. If I had to guess, I would say 95% of all the parts where made with tracks and street in mind, not gravel and mud; so you'll have a lot of fabrication. But if you have the time, energy, and skill then why not? If you could nab one for under 10k then I would just for the cool factor since there aren't many FRS rally cars.

I hope you know a lot about electronics, because this car is loaded with them. Pretty much everything has a sensor or a computer running it. The biggest problem I see with running this car is that it has an electronic throttle so you lose that snappyness that you get from a mechanical throttle. Other then that, even if you're aren't good with electronics, they're plenty of diagrams and what not for it, so it should come together in the end.cool smiley
