Yep, you've captured pretty much exactly the problem with a spec class. Pretty much the same conclusion 98% of people arrive at, which boils down to "If I could build a WRX cheaper... then no."

I don't imagine it's possible to build a race-spec full tube frame chassis with suspension, motor, trans, and electricals for $15k. The side-by-sides with CVTs go for more than that, and they have the benefit of mass production.

Thus my belief that a "capable spec class" will remain a pipe dream... unless someone comes along and starts offering big prize money for it.

The only place I said Spec was if I could make a car that could fit the rules. Not at all a spec class more of what like I said EVERY other motor sport has. A tube chassis car. Correct utv's are super expensive. The thing is I come from a back ground hated by rally guys where an old used tube chassis car can be bought and raced competativly for under 3k. Building a good competative rwd 4 cyl car can easily be built for 15K. The tuffest part about the hole thing is working doors and a windshiled. The rest is a breeze. The most compettive class in GRC is the lights class with good car counts and new competaters. Guess what its a tube chassis car. 75K and all wheel drive but still very competative and the same cost as an R2. RWD cuts the build cost dramaticly. Kit cars get license plates and ins in all 50 states as far as I know of so no issues there.

Yeah, that kind of proves my point. If there's going to be a spec class worth the hassle, it will not appeal to the vast majority of rally racers we have, because it will not be cheaper than building "a regular old whatever". We've already proved this. We had Spec Focus, that package was around $20k. Four built. We had R2, around, what, 60k built? How many built, 3? 4? In both cases you can build a turbo WRX for less and go faster... so people do.

There's no way you can take an GRC open light car and build it for $15k by making it rear wheel drive. And if you say "Well, ok, you can cut 45k out by making it RWD" then we're back to the 30k I already talked about.

It doesn't matter that there's a used 3k circle track car kicking around... 3k wouldn't even get you seats, harnesses, a helmet, suit and hans for two people. Much less the raw cost of steel to make all the rest of the car.

Spec classes are decent marketing tools. They do not, without external input (like GRC's TV coverage) make for cheaper and faster racing than building a regular car.

Jeff. Not everybody hates roundy roundy...most complaining cmes from guys who are latent-homos and who would be afraid they would be lured away from the blue fucking Subarus if they didn't shout LA-LA-LA-LA-!!! while covering their ears.

They haven't a clue about it OR rally..

However.

Globular Rally Cross?
Are you fucking using that made-for-TV losy turd of a empty grandstand excuse for a TV commercial as an example of anything?

Have you dropped a diff on your haid?

And the little children running around in the little cars?

What?

Not sure why the idea of a tube chassis keeps being called a spec class? 100% garuntee a rwd tube chassis car can be built and be competative with any current rallycar in the usa for 15k or less.

A spec class to me means all the cars are made by the same manufacturer with all the same parts to make it all about the driver and set up guys.

A tube chassis car again raced in EVERY other motorsport has multiple chassis builders multiple suspension set ups with multiple thoughts on what makes a car go fast.

Classes to me are a set of rules or guide lines that a car is built off from. Quick example RWD drive only any 4 cylinder front engine with a engine set back rule. a track width say 65" a wheel base say 99" and a total wieght maybe 2600 lbs. add in some saftey rules and maybe a few green house lay outs to choose from. Kind of like there is now but maybe add in what the floor (1/8" steel) and cage welds to .095 2x3 tubing maybe. let the engenuity go on suspension set ups. There you go a new affordable easy up keep rebuildable new tube chassis car rally ready for 15k. A guy hits a tree smucks the front end up. h e goes home pops out the engine takes to the chassis builder and has them weld a new front clip on. a few hundred on a clip and some labor to weld it on and your back at for the next rally.

I built a really nice tube road racing car and because I was used to doing interior aluminum in my day job, figured it was pretty good. First rain race there was water coming from everywhere. If it were dust, forget it!

Thank you..Its so reassuring to be told that "it will be exciting to see" one of these "aggressive" cars which all look like they came off the same 13 y.o. Japanese schoolboys sketch pad...

It would be even more "exciting to see aggressive cars" that like stood up and and the magically transformed into giant monsters that fly around and destroy Tokyo while battling for the win.
