He said something about an RWD escort that he already has finished....

Sounds like that should be the rally car right there. What rear end? Pics?

PS audi used a 4.11 locking rear end in every small body car up to 95. Vacuum actuated diff lock. Allows you to go from drifto welded rear diff to open at the push of a button.

Good lord man!! Why build a non competitive open class car? Or is this just an engineering exercise? They say you almost have to hate your rally car, so when you crash it, you won't feel so bad. Throw a cage in the Escort, run some rallies, and then decide where to go with the car.

So your trying to convince me that an American version build of a tx3 turbo laser does not and will not have the ability to rally?

You may want to stand down and take a hard look to see what you really want. would you rather rally or would you rather have an AWD escort? i use or instead of and because you can have both if you want, as countless others have already pointed out it is not a sustainable option. not unless you come from money. and you do keep lots of money right? if that were true you would simply import that laser from Australia and fix it up. If you're looking to rally who knows we may see each other out there in dueling GT's.
call pierce motor sports and order up the cage kit, skid plate mounts control arms etc , etc., then call Charles at safedrives for all of you safety needs. Those two calls alone should max out the visa.

As A.J. said, the key word is "competitive". Right now, to be at the pointy end of the Open pack, nobody seems to be bothering to build stuff without an active center diff. Furthermore, the good differentials for the platform (like the one that DaveK mentioned) are no longer available - I just logged into my Mazda Motorsports account to check. Gearbox stuff has been touched upon. There's a few places that make struts still (including John) so you're not as screwed there as you could be, but I'm hearing that things like uprights and control arms and such are out of production for the GTX - they just didn't make many of the things over here. Also, to my knowledge, nobody has done work on the Mazda B-motors to have it put out competitive power through a restrictor - and on top of that, they're cast iron block, which does nothing positive for weight distribution.

Put it this way. If you bought a complete, fully sorted Laser/323GTX rally car, you'd be in the same position as vintage race guys - documentation on what some of the competition parts are not existing anymore, and having even basic stuff being out of production, so you're forced to junkyard scavenge or fabricate basic spare parts, and try to track down people who still remember what the competition parts are and where to get them. If you wanted to be competitive (that is to say, actually competitive - not "hey, I won when nobody with a seriously prepared car and some ability showed up" ) with the modern Open class machinery, the cash and time outlay to do so would be pretty large; think about it, you'd have to bridge at least a decade of competitive development, and at the end of that, you'd have a bunch of custom one-off parts that you can't find spares for when you break something.

State a simple goal please. Do you want to enjoy rallying, or do you want to try and feild an oddball car?

RWD rallying is the most fun you can have in a car. Driving like some crazy Finn, is AWESOME!!!! Your not going to win anything in that car you have envisioned, I doubt you could get in the to 1/2 of the AWD feild. Build the RWD and come try to kick my ass.

And guess what stayed HOME this weekend at Black River? Hint (it's also hiding in this picture).

I like the car ahead of the Escort Cossie.
